ARBORIST SUPERVISOR

PAY RANGE: $31.00 - $43.77 PER HOUR DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

WORK SCHEDULE: 7:00 AM TO 3:30 PM, MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY

The Arborist Supervisor oversees field and daily operations pertaining to maintaining the landscape of City parks and properties, including the required maintenance, planting, care and removal of trees and shrubs. They are responsible for determining work assignments, providing direction, and performing key supervisory responsibilities for their team of Parks Maintenance employees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs supervisory responsibilities for a team of parks maintenance employees; provides direction and coaching related to specialized work assignments; recruits, hires, and retains employees; monitors work performance, provides coaching and development, and completes performance evaluations; addresses employee concerns.
  • Provides knowledge related to tree purchasing and placement; selects trees from the nursery and prepares them for planting; ensures staff make appropriate ground preparations; inserts fertilization caps, root barriers, and uses cultural techniques to improve tree health; plans tree plantings along roadways and open areas; ensures proper watering, pruning, and maintenance.
  • Monitors the health and life cycle of trees; maintains and cares for street and park trees; ensures public safety around work sites; responds to emergency situations involving City trees and assesses the situation to determine appropriate actions; analyzes safety situations and ensures the safety of the team is priority at all times.
  • Operates pruning equipment including chainsaws, pole saws, pruners, aerial bucket, tree spade, brush chipper, and related tools; participates in and trains tree trimming crews; leads removal of limbs, dead trees, and fallen limbs; performs basic repair and maintenance of assigned equipment; participates in snow-related duties.
  • Budgets for herbicide usage and related application costs; assesses potential problems with utility lines; sprays for poison ivy; ensures staff use pesticides according to regulations.
  • Maintains accurate records of tree planting and maintenance activities; ensures staff complete daily maintenance logs and other records; responds to public inquiries and complaints; explains City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; conducts on-site visits as needed.
  • Engages in the design of new/renovated park landscapes, median landscapes, and irrigation projects; plans annual budgets and division work plans; researches cost estimates; secures bids or quotes for purchases; assists other departments with forestry-related concerns.


Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of five years of increasingly responsible experience working in landscape maintenance with an emphasis in tree maintenance is required.

Education: A bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field is preferred.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license with favorable driving record is required. A class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement is required within six months of employment. Must have a Kansas Arborist Association certification and/or International Arborist Certification, and Commercial Applicator Certification. Tree Risk Assessment Qualification preferred.

Environmental or Physical Demands: The arborist supervisor works outside in a variety of weather and environmental conditions such as wind, sun, rain, pollen, dust, allergens, and other elements. This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time and to frequently traverse uneven outdoor areas, perform physical activities that require considerable use of one's arms and legs moving one's whole body to climb, lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl while handling materials. May use rope and saddle or lift to climb trees in excess of 60feet tall and will be working at heights. Will operate a variety of hand and power tools sometimes while working at heights. Must regularly lift and/or move up to80pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently. May drive or ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the day. Must be able to work in distracting situations including high volume traffic areas and city medians.
