Under immediate supervision, performs heavy routine manual labor involved in construction, maintenance, and repair work of City streets and public works projects. Assignments may be in street maintenance and cleaning, roadway markings and signs, tree services, and graffiti abatement.

The duties assigned to this entry-level class frequently involve the performance of heavy manual labor. This is routine work, closely supervised, with employees receiving specific instructions at the beginning of each job. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Maintenance Worker II by the latter classification’s knowledge of and ability to use specific tools, equipment, and materials to perform skilled tasks at a journey-level capacity. Incumbents in this class report to a Street Maintenance Supervisor or a Tree Maintenance Supervisor.
Currently, there are multiple vacancies are in Public Works Agency - Maintenance Services Division.

In addition, this classification is scheduled to receive a 3% salary increase effective 07/14/2024

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

Performs concrete, asphalt, and general construction, maintenance, and repair activities of City streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, fences, and walls, including resurfacing and pouring sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; sealing cracks; applying applicable chemicals to surfaces; raking, compacting, and paving surfaces; and cleaning up work areas. Cleans City streets by removing abandoned items, non-hazardous spills, and other debris. Cleans, operates, and maintains vehicles and a variety of light to heavy construction and maintenance machinery and equipment, including those powered by gas and electric power. Operates, maintains, and stores power spray equipment and chemicals. Maintains street markings and signage, including installation, removal, and repair. Sets-up traffic safety devices and barricades. Performs tree service duties and weed abatement, which may require the use of tree chippers, chain saws, and other gas powered equipment and includes helping to lower tree limbs, trimming shrubs, pruning small trees and bushes, sectioning limbs, assisting in removing trees, and planting trees. Removes graffiti markings by using paint to cover affected areas. Maintains vehicles, storage sites, and other work areas. Prepares, loads, and unloads supplies and materials. Lifts, moves, and carries heavy objects. Maintains and records accurate work logs and documentation. Uses computer or similar devices to input data and retrieve work orders. Responds to general public inquiries. Responds to emergency requests during and after work hours. Follows safe work practices when performing work and operating equipment. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of laboring or related experience involving construction, maintenance and repair of streets; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of: basic construction and maintenance work; tools and equipment used in public works construction, maintenance and repair work; safety precautions and practices in the operation of these common tools and equipment; standards and guidelines for safe work area traffic control; English usage; safe driving practices.
  • Skill in: the safe use of vehicles and common tools and equipment used in a variety of public works construction, maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to: understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; perform routine tasks of a strenuous physical nature, including lifting up and carrying objects weighing up to 95 pounds, often for extended periods and under occasionally adverse climatic conditions; operate standard transmission vehicles; measure and sort materials and supplies, perform basic arithmetic; communicate effectively.
SPECIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess and retain a valid California Class C Driver's License as a condition of employment.
  • In addition, candidates must obtain a valid California Class B or higher Driver's License and must obtain a Tanker Endorsement within one year of hire in order to successfully complete the probationary work test period and must retain said license and endorsement as a condition of continued employment in this classification.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE
  • Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent is desirable, but not required.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS Must be willing and able to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed; must be willing and able to respond to after-hours emergency calls. Must be willing and able to work outside in varying weather conditions.

Performance Examination ( Weight of 40%) (tentatively scheduled for June 18, 2024) : may include a demonstration of skill in the identification and proper operation of equipment used in public works construction, maintenance, and repair.

Oral Examination ( Weight of 60%) (tentatively scheduled for June 18, 2024) : will evaluate the candidates' knowledge, skills, abilities, training and experience in relation to those factors which are essential for successful performance on the job.
