What to expect from the Los Angeles County Fire Academy?
Fire Fighter Trainees participate in an intensive training program that includes basic firefighting and emergency medical treatment responsibilities. The basic firefighting training program involves both field and classroom instruction prior to appointment as a Fire Fighter. Recruits must have the mental ability to assimilate classroom instructions and the physical skill, stamina, and coordination to become proficient in all firefighting and rescue techniques.
Essential Job Functions
Position Responsibilities:- Under close supervision, participates in a firefighting training course.
- Through classroom and field training, learns proper firefighting techniques and procedures for fighting structural, watershed, chemical, petroleum, electrical and other fires.
- Receives instructions and participates in field training to learn proper procedures and acquire proficiency in the rescue or evacuation of persons endangered by fire or disaster in the provision of emergency medical care.
- Receives instructions in pre-fire plan inspection and enforcement of the Fire Code.
- Receives instructions and learns the proper care and operation of all fire-suppression apparatus.
- Works in a team environment while providing patient and compassionate care to members of the public in emergency and non-emergency conditions.
- Drives automotive equipment in the performance of duties.

Required License/Certificate(s) & Submission Process:In order to be placed on the eligible register, applicants must meet all of the following requirements: A current and passing written test score issued by the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC).*
-OR- If you do not have a passing FCTC Written Test score, you may obtain information on how to complete the written test by going to FCTConline.org .
For a score to be considered valid, applicants must have received a passing score within the last 12 months. When applying for this position, please make sure to use the same email address you used to complete your FCTC profile. Upon receiving your application, the Fire Department will review and confirm your FCTC score with the testing center. Applicants cannot take the written test more than once in a 30-day period, and only the most recent test score will be considered valid by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Once your application is submitted and you possess a passing score, additional attempts to improve your score will not be accepted . Therefore, you are encouraged to have a favorable score before submitting an application. Please indicate your written test status on Supplemental Question 5. -OR- If you do not have a CPAT certificate, you may go to FCTConline.org to obtain information on how to get one. This must be provided with your application

It is the candidate's responsibility to maintain a current and valid CPAT certification that remains valid until final appointment.A copy of a high school diploma, its equivalent, or a higher degree from an accredited institution. This must be sent with your application
at the time of filing or within 12 months of receiving your most recent passing FCTC Written Test score, to
FFTapplicant@fire.lacounty.gov . In order to receive credit for a high school diploma, its equivalent, or higher such as a Bachelor's degree, you
must include a legible copy of either the official diploma/degree, official transcript(s), or official letter from the accredited institution (which shows the date the diploma/degree was awarded) with the Registrar's signature and school seal.
Failure to provide proof of education will result in application rejection.
Note: "official transcript" is defined as a transcript that bears the school's seal and states "official" and/or "copy" issued by the school's Registrar Office. A printout of the transcript from the school's website is
NOT considered official and therefore,
will not be accepted and will result in your application being incomplete and rejected.
A current valid, non-probationary, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate/license that will remain effective for at least six months beyond the date of appointment. This must be provided with your application at the time of filing or within 12 months of receiving your most recent passing FCTC Written Test score, to

Before applying for this position, applicants are encouraged to schedule themselves for the FCTC Written Test. Applicants who do not possess a current FCTC Written Test score; however, successful applicants will not be placed on the Los Angeles County Fire Department's eligible register until these requirements are met. Similarly, applicants who do not submit the required proof of education, EMT certificate/license, and/or CPAT certificate at the time of filing or within 12 months of receiving their most recent passing FCTC Written Test score, may compete in this examination; however, successful applicants will not be placed on the eligible register until these requirements are met.
AGE: At least 18 years of age at the time of appointment. *The FCTC Written Test is a 100-question, multiple choice test consisting of the following four sections:
Section 1 - Recall and Comprehend Verbal and Visual Information. This section requires candidates to watch two short videos and answer questions based on the scenarios presented.Section 2 - Apply Mechanical ReasoningSection 3 - Solve Mathematical ProblemsSection 4 - Recall and Comprehend Technical Information from Written MaterialsMultiple Choice Assessments Are Not Reviewable By Applicants Per Civil Service Rule 7.19.
Only those applicants with a score of 70% or higher on the written test will be placed on the eligible register.
Taking The FCTC Written Test:
The FCTC Written Test is administered quarterly, at a minimum. Additional tests will be added as needed, so check their website frequently. FCTC does not administer online tests.

License:
Candidates must possess a California Class C driver's license before being appointed. Successful candidates for this position will be required to obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A candidates’ driver’s license must not be suspended, restricted or revoked.
ANY CANDIDATE WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS FOUR OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

Physical Class & Requirements:
Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, and/or working above ground on irregular surfaces. This class includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity, such as Safety positions. A Fire Fighter Trainee must successfully complete and graduate from the County of Los Angeles Fire Department Academy to be appointed as a Fire Fighter.
Supplemental Questionnaire:As part of this application process, applicants are required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. Applicants who fail to meet the requirements of this position as a result of their responses will be disqualified, and their written test score will not be valid.

Eligibility Information:The names of candidates meeting all requirements and receiving a passing FCTC score will be placed on the eligible register for a period of twelve (12) months. Candidates will not be placed on the eligible register if they:
- Do not meet all requirements listed in the Selection and Physical Requirements sections.
Successful candidates will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
In lieu of traditional banding, an alternative banding procedure may be employed as a result of a special study sanctioned by the Department of Human Resources, consistent with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D). The special study encompasses a variety of factors, including vacancies, historic use of eligibility lists, and statistical properties of the test administered.
Vacancy Information: The resulting eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the County of Los Angeles Fire Department. Being added to the eligible register does not guarantee an offer of employment.
Background Check And Medical Examination Information:If asked to provide information about a conviction history, any convictions or court records that are exempted by a valid court order do not have to be disclosed.
Successful candidates who are given a conditional offer of employment will be required to complete a criminal background check, including a fingerprint search, followed by a medical examination, consistent with local, state and federal law. A candidate with a conviction history that has a direct and adverse relationship with the duties of the Fire Fighter Trainee position may have their conditional offer of employment rescinded and may be removed from the certification list pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04.
In addition, candidates must successfully complete a medical examination and be able to perform all of the essential functions of the Fire Fighter Trainee classification, either with or without reasonable accommodations. A candidate who does not successfully complete a medical examination or is unable to perform all of the essential functions of the Fire Fighter Trainee classification may have their conditional offer of employment rescinded and may be removed from the certification list pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04.
