General The Facilities Technician reports to the Assistant Manager, Facilities and is responsible for providing building maintenance services at the District facilities in accordance with established standards and procedures. Ensure all maintenance and repair activities are recorded, organized, and complete. Records must be readily available for reference, audit, and quality control. Collaborate with District departments to obtain work scope information, discuss options, collect job details and estimate labor and material costs relating to work order. Inspect and report on functional operation of buildings, grounds and related facility systems including: heating and cooling systems, fueling and lubrication systems, storm, plumbing, potable water, sewer and industrial waste systems, fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems, electrical power and lighting systems, in-ground hydraulic lift systems, bus parking designation markings, roofing systems, bus exhaust evacuation systems, roll up access doors and roll up fire doors, and environmental protection systems. Maintain clear and accurate records of maintenance tasks performed and status of District facilities. Develop and maintain a spare parts inventory of basic maintenance hand and power tools. Maintain open communications with other departments; develop and maintain effective internal relationships. Maintain a safe and clean work environment. Must participate in weekend and holiday on-call rotation. Safely operate a variety of maintenance vehicles. Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one’s self, fellow employees and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to: High School Diploma or GED Three (3) years full-time industrial building/facility maintenance experience, or a combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Must have valid California driver’s license with a safe driving record. Preferred Qualifications General experience troubleshooting electrical systems, heating and cooling (HVAC) systems, plumbing, and hydraulic systems. Able to work safely in different kinds of weather conditions and workspace environments. Able to safely lift 50lbs and climb/work on ladders and other equipment. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry and first working level in the Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker class series. Incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, facilities, and related machinery and equipment. Incumbents assist with the more skilled assignments under direct guidance. As incumbents demonstrate requisite skills and knowledge on a sustained basis, it is expected that they will be promoted to the Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker II level. This class is distinguished from Building Maintenance Worker II in that incumbents work with more guidance and supervision, performing a narrower range of assignments, which require a lower level of skill. REPORTS TO Building and Grounds Superintendent or Facilities and Grounds Manager CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISED This is not a supervisory class. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of training and experience, which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Previous work experience in building and/or grounds maintenance work is highly desirable. Knowledge Of/Ability To Knowledge of: Basic knowledge of practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the building trades. General grounds keeping and landscape maintenance methods and procedures. Safe work practices and procedures. Ability to: Learn and perform a variety of general maintenance and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, facilities, and associated equipment. Perform grounds keeping and landscape maintenance assignments. Learn to read and understand plans, construction drawings, and blueprints. Learn to recognize and locate conditions, which require maintenance and repair. Use and care for hand and power tools used in building trades and grounds keeping work. Learn to estimate time and materials for maintenance assignments. Make basic mathematical calculations. Follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Selection Process: All completed applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed. Depending upon the number of applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, the examination process may include a screening committee (pass/fail) and/or an oral examination (100%) which may include a written practical component to determine placement on the eligible list. In accordance with California Government Code section 3100, et., seq., all County of San Benito employees are considered disaster service workers who may be required to report for duty, or remain on duty to address disaster service activities in the event of an emergency or disaster and are required to undertake an applicable loyalty oath.
