The Library is seeking to hire an experienced and innovative Public Education Specialist to oversee STEAM and maker programmingat the Vivian J Lincoln Library. The ideal candidate for this position will have extensive knowledge of learning theory and a passion for experiential learning. They will be customer-focused, creative, and enthusiastic. They will also be engaging public speakers, comfortable with technology, possess excellent time management and communication skills, and enjoy working with library customers of all ages, backgrounds, dispositions, and abilities.

The purpose of this position is to oversee the daily operations and educational programming of the creative lab/makerspace within a community branch library. The successful candidate will enjoy serving the public one-to-one, in a group setting, or across a customer service desk and have a work history that includes experience working with youth (preschool through high school) and adult learners.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Education, Public Administration, or Social Sciences.
  • At least two years of experience in outreach or education.
  • Ability to work at/travel to various locations.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least two years of experience developing and implementing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and maker programs and initiatives.
  • Experience with fabrication and other maker equipment such as a vinyl cutter, laser etcher/cutter, 3D printer, etc.
  • Ability to speak, write, and understand Spanish.

The Public Education Specialist job responsibilities include:
  • Conceptualize, plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate STEAM and maker programs using the Library’s framework for programming design and evaluation.
  • Oversee daily operations of the branch creative lab including space organization, management of supplies, inventory, and equipment, and the collection and submission of statistical data and reports.
  • Lead virtual and in-person workshops, classes, and hands-on learning projects for youth and adults.
  • Provide customers with technology assistance and training, and assist customers with self-service equipment and technology.
  • Adapt workshops and activities to engage customers with different learning styles.
  • Develop and sustain partnerships with local community organizations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch, and lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
