About the Department

The Office of the City Attorney is committed to providing excellent legal services, consistent with the highest professional and ethical standards, to the City with the goal of protecting and advancing its interests in serving the people of San José. The Office is seeking an experienced individual to support the Litigation Department. The ideal candidate will possess experience drafting court forms, pleadings and discovery documents; performing legal research and fact finding; assembling, organizing, reviewing, summarizing and processing documents; interviewing witnesses; and summarizing depositions and/or records. The successful candidate will be self-motivated; detail-oriented with good analytical skills; a team player who possesses strong organizational and computer skills; and will have good verbal and written communication skills.

This position is funded through this fiscal year, June 30, 2025; however, there's a possibility that the position will be extended. The extension of this position is subject to the City Manager's approval.

Position Duties

This position is responsible for performing paralegal duties in connection with the Litigation Department requiring both sound judgment and good technical skills. These duties may include, but are not limited to review, analysis, editing, organizing and summarizing documents, media and records; drafting court forms, pleadings and discovery, preparing administrative records, and assisting attorneys with case management and trial preparation.

The annual salary range for a Legal Analyst I is $88,954.32 to $108,108.00, and the annual salary range for a Legal Analyst II is $97,078.80 to $117,979.68. This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

Education and Experience

Legal Analyst I

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university AND three (3) years of increasingly responsible investigations or paralegal experience performing investigations, processing liability claims, OR researching and preparing legal documents such as discovery documents, pleadings, contracts, ordinances, or resolutions.

Legal Analyst II

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university AND five (5) years of increasingly responsible investigations or paralegal experience performing investigations, processing liability claims, OR researching and preparing legal documents such as discovery documents, pleadings, contracts, ordinances, or resolutions.

Acceptable Substitution
  • An Associate’s Degree OR 60 semester units/90 quarter units from an accredited college or university AND additional years of increasingly responsible investigations or paralegal work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to two (2) years of the education requirement.
  • Completion of a Paralegal program, including possession of a Paralegal Certificate, may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience OR one (1) year of the education requirement.

Required Licensing (such as driver’s license, certifications, etc.)

Possession of a valid State of California driver's license.
