Job Description

This position performs technical maintenance work to the plant facility and equipment. This position may also provide relief Plant Operator duties to assist with continued operation of the Plant.
This position works night shift on a 12 hour rotating shift 7p-7a. Every other weekend off. Opportunity for lateral progression to Maintenance Mechanic II level with higher rate of pay.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Inspects, troubleshoot and maintains assigned equipment. Completes preventative maintenance on equipment, machines, and the plant. Monitors all activities for compliance with normal safety procedures. Performs corrective maintenance/repairs as necessary due to mechanical failure, damage, etc. Maintains maintenance and service records and reports, including work orders and inspection reports. Communicates with the Assistant Plant Manager and Maintenance Supervisor regarding current maintenance needs and scheduling. Interfaces with Plant Operator to coordinate activities. Informs Maintenance Supervisor of needed parts and/or supplies needed. Keep plants and maintenance areas clean and orderly. Enters activities in the appropriate log. Ensures maintenance procedures are properly logged. Assists with boiler cleaning activities. Assists the Maintenance Supervisor with other tasks and/or assist in any areas of the plant operations requiring additional assistance. Operates front end loaders and/or load ash truck as needed. Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment; ensures equipment is safely operated and driving laws are obeyed; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed. Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting, investigating, and follow-up of equipment incidents, or personal injuries. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Maintenance Mechanic I
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of equipment mechanical experience.
  • Complete and pass pre-employment drug test


Supplemental information

  • Ability to perform work involved with pressurized equipment, rotating equipment, computer programs, pneumatics, valves, reading gauges, etc.
  • Ability to operate assigned tools/equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to moving parts, debris, small/narrow spaces, etc.
  • Knowledge of boilers (safety procedures, proper shut down), chemicals (proper usage), electrical systems (110 volt switches, outlets, fixtures, etc), and plumbing (piping, valves, repair).
  • Ability to perform effective welding projects, if assigned.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment including electrical energy, pneumatics, hydraulics and proper safety use.
  • Ability to effectively operate necessary tools in completing job tasks.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of industry safety rules and ability to utilize Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to comprehend, retain and apply County, State, and Federal policies and legislation, i.e. local ordinances, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, safety manuals and warning labels.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and understand and carry out instructions received in writing or verbally.
  • Ability to maintain regular, reliable, prompt and predictable on-site job attendance.
  • Ability to work allocated hours which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to lawfully operate designated equipment/vehicles at all times duties are performed.
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications consistent for this position.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to apply sound judgment and discretion in performing duties, resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.
