Position Scope

Under general supervision, coordinates all digital and technology components of the Library Division.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Manages all digital components, including e-resources and databases within the Library Division with supervisor responsibility for library staff working with digital components of the library. This includes serving as the Library system administrator for integrated library software system (ILS); training staff in operation of system; coordinating software upgrades and enhancements and resolving system problems with ILS vendor
  • Manages strategic technology planning including budgeting
  • Reviews and evaluates all library digital collections and technologies, and recommends the purchase of new digital collections and technologies
  • Recommends the removal of digital collections and technologies that no longer serve the needs of the community
  • Administers the library website, app, digital event calendar, room reservation software, and digital signage
  • Coordinates with the City IT Department to plan and implement all new software and hardware within the library division
  • Manages the ordering and acquisitions process for all e-resources and databases.
  • Monitors library division’s digital collection budget and expenses to identify and resolve problems and priorities
  • Plans, researches, writes, and administers grants based upon needs of the library; analyzes grant options and library qualifications
  • Works closely with third-party system vendors to constantly improve library technology services
  • Prepares and reviews statistical and analytical reports of library technology activities, operations and procedures; gathers and compiles data for reports
  • Provides software and hardware user support for all library staff and customers; troubleshoots software, hardware, peripherals, gaming and audio/visual systems
  • Monitors and reviews trends in library technology practices and functions; recommends operational and policy improvements
  • Performs other duties as required


Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or Computer Science or related field and three (3) years of professional experience with computer technology experience. Two (2) years computer technology experience in a library setting preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • City policies and procedures
  • Basic principles of supervision and training
  • Principles and practices for management of library division programs
  • Library technical services
  • Trends and usages of technology within the library

Skill in:
  • Researching, developing and coordinating technology-based projects
  • Operations of various library software programs: Polaris, Envisionware, PC RES, collection HQ, Communico, etc.
  • Making oral presentations and promoting library services
  • Providing effective customer service with tact and courtesy
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software

Ability to:
  • Follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions
  • Work with multiple parties to complete projects
  • Collect, evaluate and interpret varied information and data; perform extensive research, make independent analysis and report findings
  • Use discretion and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Prepare and present concise and informative oral and written presentations
  • Work independently on multiple assignments and meet critical deadlines
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with City employees, officials, other agencies and the general public
  • Communicate with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds
  • Use logical and creative thought processes to develop recommendations and solutions
  • Work under pressure of deadlines
  • Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work


Additional Information

Special Requirements: Valid Arizona Driver’s License. Evening hours and weekends required

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in a Public Library

Reports To: Library Manager

Work Schedule: GenerallyMonday - Friday; hours worked to be established by department based on needs.

12-Month goals:
  • Learn Library Website software, Patron Point software, and Communico Software.
  • Improve the library’s website and digital platforms to ensure they are user-friendly, accessible, and mobile-responsive. Implement tools for easier navigation and searchability of digital collections.
  • Identify and acquire new digital resources that meet the needs of the community, including research databases, and educational software.
  • Regularly review and analyze data on the usage of digital resources to understand patron needs and preferences. Use this data to inform future acquisitions and programming.
