The Position

Museum Attendants assist visitors at museums and provide information and directions and perform routine security activities to ensure the safety of visitors and protect exhibits.

In addition, incumbents, working closely with a Curator and/or assigned supervisor, perform a variety of tasks including the composition of newsletter and/or website articles and content; assist with program and special event planning and implementation; lead school tours and set up for lectures; manage volunteer program to include recruiting and training volunteers in general museum responsibilities; schedule and coordinate docents and volunteers; prepare paperwork for the acquisition of artifacts and catalogs; index research material; and perform other duties as requested by a Curator. Museum Attendant II's may also be assigned responsibility for the daily operation of the museum store which includes conducting sales, reconciling sales at end-of-shift, stocking shelves, taking inventory, preparing purchase requisitions, and creating displays. This is the advanced journey level in the series.

This recruitment is for a Museum Attendant 2 position, located in Carson City, Nevada within the division of Museums and History, at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. This position is a Thursday-through-Monday schedule, year-round. Museum Attendants perform a broad range of tasks at the museum including, but not limited to opening and closing the museum; volunteer recruitment and management; volunteer orientation and scheduling; scheduling tours/school groups; handling cash assets; counting money; filling out daily cash reports; and assisting in admissions, museum store, and depot as required. In addition, museum attendants provide visitor services such as providing general museum information, directions, and ensuring the safety of visitors and museum assets. The position provides a variety of public services to museum patrons. The incumbent will be responsible for providing information, orientation and interpretive tours of permanent and changing exhibits. The incumbent will also be expected to interact with staff, volunteers, and the public in a professional and courteous manner both verbally and through written communication. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of clerical experience which included working with the public; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. Working a Rotating/Flexible Schedule is required. Some positions require work on weekends and/or holidays. Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
