Position Overview

The City of Henderson announces an examination to create a consideration for hire list and to fill one (1) Part-Time vacancy for the classification of Cook in the Police Department. The consideration for hire list may be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification for up to one (1) year.

Under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty planning and preparing meals for inmates and staff within the Henderson Detention Center; and performs related duties as assigned.
Special Note:
This position works in a correctional facility. The successful candidate must be able and willing to work in a jail environment, including working with inmates.Your current Food Handler Safety Training Card must be attached to your application.This position does not qualify for employer-paid benefits or wage increases.Work schedule will consist of an average of 19 hours/week. Hours per week may increase or decrease based on Department need. May be required to work a flexible work schedule, outside of normal business hours, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or extended hours.External candidates, probationary full-time, part-time, and temporary City of Henderson employees will start at the first step of the salary range.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent
  • Three (3) years full time experience preparing meals for an institutional or commercial kitchen
  • Must possess a valid Food Handler Safety Training Card at the time of application
  • ServSafe training must be completed within the first three (3) months of employment
  • Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check, and a wants/warrants check
  • Must complete Security Awareness and National Crime Information Center (NCIC)/Nevada Criminal Justice Information System (NCJIS) certification within six months of hire/transfer and be recertified every two years. Must maintain certifications in NCIC/NCJIS as a condition of continued employment
  • Desirable: Experience in preparing meals for a detention center and directing inmates assigned to work in the kitchen

Selection Process

The selection process will begin with an employment application package screening, with the best-qualified candidates being invited to participate further in the assessment process.
