The City of Olathe city owned streetlight system is a comprehensive streetlighting program that enhances public safety within the community with an integrated approach to the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of a city’s street lighting infrastructure, and to provide safe, reliable, and energy-efficient illumination for all public streets within the municipal limits of the City of Olathe, contributing directly to the safety and security of the community.

The City offers a competitive total compensation package with great benefits and starting pay from $30.50 to $35.89 per hour, based on experience and other qualifications.

The Streetlight Supervisor oversees, directs, and manages all activities and operations of the city-owned street light system, from design and construction to ongoing maintenance. This role also involves updating and maintaining the asset inventory and work order database in a mobile environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plans, directs and coordinates street light system activities, including troubleshooting and initiating repairs for city owned street light system; inspects streetlighting devices installed/repaired by contractors or other city employees for code compliance; leads, coaches and evaluates assigned personnel.
  • Investigates complaints and requests from city officials and residents; provides assistance to other city departments and agencies; participates in after hours on-call rotation responding to afterhours service needs as required.
  • Estimates time, materials, and equipment for jobs, and requisitions materials as needed.
  • Inspects street lighting installations and repairs for code compliance, making field engineering decisions as necessary; conducts research, tests new technologies and/or equipment, and decides on appropriate implementation to improve street light safety and operation.


Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of three years of relevant experience and at least one year of supervisory experience are required.

Education: A h igh school diploma or equivalent is required, along with specialized training in electronics, electricity, or a related field.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement and a favorable driving record are required within three months of hire. Additionally, a valid International Municipal Sign Association (IMSA), certification in Street Lighting I and a Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician certification are required.

Environmental or Physical Demands: Work involves working in the office and outdoors. Exposure to weather conditions, various hazards such as electricity, vehicular traffic and heavy moving equipment is expected. Also requires repetitive motion of handling traffic control devices and materials.
