General Description and Classification Standards

Incumbent supervises inspectors involved in the building inspection operations and activities for the enforcement of the building and zoning ordinances of the City of Atlanta. Duties include but are not limited to managing the day-to-day activities of the inspectors, providing guidance, mentorship, and knowledge within the Inspections Division. Incumbent also assists with managing inspector’s workload, assigning geographical inspection areas, improving processes, training inspectors, and conducting quality assurance and quality control activities, which includes ensuring all structures comply with all applicable building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, energy, life safety, and other related codes. Ensure inspections are completed as committed to the established metrics and that there is consistency in the inspection processes, procedures, and practices.

Incumbent must possess strong interpersonal skills to develop good working relationships at various levels and the ability to foster a strong customer focused environment. Must have the ability to exercise initiative and a considerable amount of independent judgment and have experience with highly visible/controversial projects.

Supervision Received

Incumbent reports to the Chief Combination Inspector and normally provide guidance regarding overall mission and unusual priorities, etc. and sets work methods, timetables, etc.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for supervising and evaluating assigned fire sprinkler inspections staff. Addresses employee concerns and problems, directs assignments, counsels, and disciplines, and completes employee performance appraisals. Analyze, redefine, and implement improvements to the fire sprinkler inspections process that are customer focused, accurate, efficient, and consistent. Monitor daily fire sprinkler inspection productivity and ensure a consistent level of best-in-class customer service. Perform periodic reviews of fire sprinkler inspector’s work to verify that inspections are completed effectively and efficiently. Preparation and timely submission of periodic reports analyzing fire sprinkler inspector’s performance. Participates in the inspection’s interview/selection process; train, motivate, and evaluate assigned staff. Provide or coordinate training; work with inspectors to correct deficiencies; implements discipline as needed. Monitor and report the inspection service level agreements (SLA) established for all disciplines. Assist with the development of the Fire Sprinkler Inspector program.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience

Associate degree or vocational training in mechanical engineering, architecture, plumbing systems or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in plan review for buildings and/or fire safety systems. Five to eight years of increasingly responsible inspection experience in the Fire sprinkler for hydraulics, hazard evaluation, detection systems, Fire sprinkler control valve assembly, stand pipe design, Wet pipe systems, Deluge systems, Dry pipe systems, Pre-Action Systems, Foam water systems, FM 200 systems, Halon systems, EFSR systems, as well as NFPA 13, 13R and 13D installations requirements. Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job will be considered. Three (3) years of supervisory experience is required.

Preferred Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, plumbing systems or a related field and ten years of directly related work experience with inspections of fire safety, building, mechanical, electrical and/or plumbing trade (equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis). Four (4) or more years of supervisory experience.
