ABOUT THE POSITION

The office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the position of Forensic Assistant. As a Forensic Assistant, you will perform a variety of manual and skilled technical work involving the processing of dead bodies for examination in determining the cause and manner of death and communicating with outside agencies and funeral homes. The ideal candidate will be responsible for work related to our 24hr receiving area to include disinfecting and sterilization of work spaces and equipment, conducting radiographic scans, maintaining the chain of custody of the decedent and their personal property. The candidate will be a part of the Forensic Division and report to the Forensic Supervisor.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school AND one (1) year of full-time public contact or general office support experience, or general knowledge of medical procedures, terminology, and methods involving infection control. Previous medical/coroner experience preferred.

Working Conditions: Work with exposure to dead bodies, infectious and contagious diseases, noxious fumes and hazardous chemicals and materials. May work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations.

Licensing and Certification: Specific positions may require a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician. A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or protective powered air purifying respirator test is part of the exam.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Working hand in hand with forensic pathology technicians, investigative staff, administrative staff, mortuaries, families of decedents, and various outside agencies, responsible for receiving, weighing, measuring, fingerprinting, and photographing of decedents and checking and inventorying personal property and clothing. Maintains and sanitizes receiving area, coolers, processing area, gurneys and other equipment as needed. Maintains legal chain of custody evidentiary material, laboratory specimens, and personal property for decedents. Takes photographs of decedents to document condition of bodies and aid in identification. Interacts with family members, mortuaries, and others as needed, explaining administrative procedures and providing other relevant information. Communicates with investigative, forensic, and administrative staff as to the completion of examinations and coordinates with agencies for removal of decedents. Utilize computer for entering, editing and retrieval of data. Uses a variety of standard office and specialized equipment, such as cameras, fingerprint scanner and fingerprint equipment, digital scale, fax machine, and various other equipment. Maintains detailed records of decedents and ensures their release to the appropriate funeral home. May be required to operate a County vehicle. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in a forensic medical laboratory setting and use standard office and specialized forensic medical equipment and drive a motor vehicle; stamina to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time; strength to lift and/or maneuver objects and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone; and the ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
