Job Description

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in in Planning, Geography, Social Science, Landscape Architecture, or a planning related field, plus six (6) years of experience in planning related work, two (2) years of which included lead or supervisory responsibilities.

Twelve (12) semester hours of relevant graduate college course work may substitute for six months of required experience with a maximum substitution of two (2) years.

This position will lead a team engaged in demographic and geospatial research and analysis in the Demographics & Data team at the City of Austin’s Planning Department. This position will coordinate project and personnel assignments, defining project scopes of work, engaging in data management, outlining standard operating procedures, and ensuring project timelines are met. This position will support the work of the city demographer and respond to demographic data requests from City Council, the City Manager’s Office, City departments, and the general public by preparing reports, data visualizations, and presentations for various audiences.

The mission of the Planning Department is to provide equitable and people-centered planning services to shape an Austin where everyone can thrive.

Pay Range
$37.14 - $47.35

Hours
Generally, Monday -Friday
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexible and hybrid work schedules available.

Telework opportunities may be available after an initial training period. Telework, if approved can be up to 50% hybrid. Hybrid schedules are subject to change to meet the business needs of the department.

This position may need to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

  • Experience in project management, project scoping, milestone monitoring, and quality assurance
  • Experience in data management, analysis, interpretation, and visualization, including geospatial data
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro or equivalent software
  • Experience performing demographic methods and analysis with Census Bureau data
  • Experience in R, Python, SQL , or other programming languages
  • Experience in Microsoft Power Suite, including Power Bi and Power Automate
  • Experience in coordinating and facilitating work groups and discussions with various stakeholders
  • Experience working with data on racial/ethnic disparities within local, state, or national context and ability to engage a variety of stakeholders in challenging dialogue around racial identity, implicit bias, systemic racism, and structural inequities


Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


1. Oversees coordination of division/section activities with other division/sections/departments. Develops and evaluates plans, criteria, etc. for variety of projects, programs activities, etc.
2. Reviews statistical reports and analyzed market & economic conditions.
3. Develops short and long range plans. Develops & revises operating procedures.
4. Serves as member of various committees, task forces, etc.
5. Speaks as city representative before boards, commissions, public groups, etc.
6. Answers the most complex citizen questions and provides assistance.
7. Provides technical advice & assistance to citizens, contractors, departments, management, etc.
8. Develops policies and procedures. Develops & revises operating procedures.
9. Assists in developing division/section budget. Recommends grant application approval.
10. Manages division/section activities.
