Job Description

Job Summary

This position assists the Recreation Supervisor with the planning, organizing, and developing of various recreation activities and events for individuals with special needs in the City of Greenville's Recreation and Parks Department. The City provides recreational opportunities for people with physical or developmental disabilities.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Examples of Duties

  • Prepares and maintains reservations, attendance records and reports, employee timesheets, accident reports, and other documentation;
  • Assists with the implementation and evaluation of programs and special events;
  • Serves as training director, coach, and instructor for specialized recreation programs;
  • Assists with the supervision and training of volunteers;
  • Answers telephones, provides the public with needed information, takes registration, reservations, schedules athletic fields and facilities, and collects program fees;
  • Assists with administration and implementation of Special Olympic programs;
  • Initiates and organizes new activities for specialized recreation;
  • Promotes Special Olympics and specialized recreation through speaking engagements;
  • Transports sports teams for various events as needed;
  • Assists in requisitioning and inventorying supplies and materials;
  • Assists in the preparation of publicity materials and in publicizing events;
  • Prepares reports on recreation facility utilization;
  • Opens and closes recreation facility as needed;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree or higher in therapeutic recreation, special education, leisure studies, recreation administration or a closely related field; AND
  • One year of experience in recreation or a related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:
  • principles, practices, and techniques of applicable recreation administration.
  • customer service techniques.
  • policies and regulations affecting the operation of an athletic center.
Skilled in:
  • First Aid and CPR.
  • using athletic tools and equipment.
Ability to:
  • assist in planning, organizing, and supervising various activities.
  • communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • operate assigned equipment, including computer equipment and various software packages.
  • meet the mental and physical demands of position.
  • work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public.
  • work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.


Special Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid, current North Carolina driver's license that is not revoked, suspended, or subject to limited restoration or conditional operation privileges and an acceptable driving record. CDL Class B preferred.
  • Must possess (or obtain within 90 days of hire) and maintain valid Red Cross First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Requires flexible work hours, including evenings and weekends.
