Position Overview:
The Payroll Technician, under general supervision, provides support to the payroll office in a variety of areas including, but not limited to, answering employee payroll-related questions, time and attendance, payroll deductions, tax withholding, direct deposit, records retention and employment verification.

Travel:

If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

90 Day Provision for Additional Vacancy:

When the same or an additional vacancy occurs within a department in the same job title within 90 days after the start date of the top candidate, the hiring department may offer the additional position to another candidate from the same candidate pool.
Pay Range
$20.80 - $22.88

Hours
During the training process, this position will be required to work in office Mon-Fri, 7:45am-4:45pm.
After training it will be required to work in office Wed and Thurs, 7:45am-4:45pm and then a hybrid schedule the remaining days.
Staff eligible to telework must be in the office for at least 50% of their schedule within a two-week period. Work schedules are subject to change based on business needs.

  • Ability to greet walk-in customers, answer phone calls and emails.
  • Ability to explain payroll policies and procedures.
  • Ability to distribute mail and faxes.
  • Ability to file personnel documents and perform other clerical duties such as creating new hire folders, entering address changes, printing earning statements / W-2s.
  • Ability to complete other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Performs front desk duties for the payroll office, including greet walk-in customers, answer phone calls, and distribute payroll mail and faxes. Enters employee information into the payroll system for withholding, payroll deductions, address changes and direct deposit. Maintains security and confidentiality by following internal control policies and procedures. Secures confidential information and maintains historical records and files. Serves as back-up to Payroll Specialists. Researches and analyzes information as requested or needed; responds to requests for information reprints. Writes and creates memos and reports as requested or needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of good customer relations practices.
  • Knowledge of basic office and/or clerical procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of business English and business correspondence sufficient to compose and prepare letters, reports, etc.

  • Knowledge of data base procedures, capabilities and limitations.
  • Skill in operating a computer and using standard business software.
