Job Description

Job Summary

Examines area for concrete placement. Prepares and grades area, places and finishes concrete. Performs related duties as assigned.

Works under close supervision, typically performing routine assignments alone. Detailed instructions are frequently received. Work is arranged and planned by the crew leader. May coordinate efforts with other cement finishers and laborers.

Representative Duties

Examines area where concrete is to be placed. Prepares and grades area by pruning tree roots and excavating concrete or asphalt with various hand and power tools, skip loader, dump truck, and related equipment.

Sets concrete forms.

Mixes cement and/orders a supply of pre-mixed concrete. Pours and finishes concrete for areas including sidewalks, driveways, walls, curbs, and gutters.

Makes minor repairs to sprinkler heads and systems where needed.

May lead the activities of a crew.

Posts signs and places cones and barricades to delineate work sites as necessary.

Follows all applicable safety rules and regulations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of:

General concrete construction procedures.
Concrete mixing formulas and proportions.
Grading and drainage requirements.
Safety and traffic control practices.
Relevant city codes and standards related to concrete construction.

Ability to:

Set concrete forms.
Operate a variety of tools and equipment necessary to complete a project.
Perform skilled concrete finishing work.
Determine alternate approaches to finishing a work area.
Use formulas and take accurate measurements.

Skill in:

Reading, writing, and communicating in English at an appropriate level.
Perform math calculations at an appropriate level.
Dealing effectively with the public.
Work cooperatively with others.

Education, Training and Experience:

High school graduation or equivalent supplemented with completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training in concrete finishing needed to acquire journey-level status. Two years of performing journey-level concrete finishing work.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a Class "C" driver's license. A Class "A" driver's license will be required within six months of hire date.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed outside in seasonal hot and cold. Occasionally slippery surfaces and dust are a factor. Work with and around dirt and soil is constant. Physical demands include kneeling, bending, heavy lifting, and reading. Meeting deadlines is also a frequent occurrence.

If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.
