The Position

Dental Assistants assist dentists in the general or specialized treatment of patients in routine, emergency, and clinical research procedures in areas of diagnostic, preventive, restorative, periodontal, endodontic, pedodontic, orthodontic, oral surgery, and prosthodontic dental care.

This is the journey level in the series.

This position is located at Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center (FMWCC), in Las Vegas, Nevada. The incumbent works under the supervision of a Senior Institutional Dentist, as well as other supervisors, in the general treatment of inmates; in both routine and emergency procedures, in areas of diagnostic, preventative, restorative, periodontal, endodontic, orthodontic, oral surgery and prosthodontic dental care. Candidate must be flexible and will require a diverse set of skills clerical, clinical, interpersonal and technological. Will be responsible for a wide range tasks within the dental office including patient care, administrative related duties and laboratory functions. Candidate is expected to have the skills and experience to prepare and arrange dental instruments, materials and equipment appropriate for the procedure, take x-rays, use four-handed dental assisting techniques, clean, sterilize and disinfect dental instruments and dental operatory surfaces according to current CDC and OSHA standards, pour and trim models, schedule patients, fabricate temporary crowns. Incumbent will perform coronal polishing, remove sutures, apply/remove periodontal pack, apply temporary restorations, topical fluoride treatments, sealants and topical anesthetic as directed by staff dentist, take impressions for study models and of opposing arch, expose intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs as directed by the dentist, process, mount and label radiographs , provide patient care and instructions, order and maintain supplies and perform other duties in a professional manner as outlined in the class specifications.

To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience in a dental practice using four-handed techniques in a wide range of procedures, collecting and recording patient's medical information, exposing, processing, mounting and labeling radiographs, and applying dental sterile techniques and infectious control and exposure procedures; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education, successful completion of a recognized one-year dental assistant training program, and one year of experience working with the public collecting and recording information and/or explaining and clarifying basic information; OR one year of experience as a Dental Assistant I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
