The Position

This recruitment is being conducted to fill one (1) current full-time position for the position of Supervising Building Maintenance Worker for the Public Works Department at Napa County. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time, part-time, limited-term and extra help vacancies as they occur over the next 12 months.

The Property Management Division of the Public Works Department at Napa County provides a safe, healthy environment for County employees and visitors. The Supervising Building Maintenance Worker will plan, organize, assign, direct and review the work of maintenance staff performing building and groundskeeping maintenance in and around County buildings and facilities, will participate in the performance of building and groundskeeping maintenance duties, and will ensure a safe and efficient operation of maintenance activities.

This position has full supervisory responsibilities over maintenance staff engaged in maintaining County buildings and landscaped areas adjacent to all buildings including pedestrian walks and parking lots. This position is that of a working supervisor who is expected to be fully competent in all aspects of building and groundskeeping maintenance work. As assigned, an incumbent in this position may perform the duties of the Facilities Superintendent in that person's absence.

The ideal candidate will have outstanding organizational and planning skills and will be well- versed in building construction and maintenance techniques, including but not limited to: Electrical, Commercial, and residential plumbing systems, HVAC, and Framing. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have excellent leadership and team building skills, effectively communicate both verbally and written, and will lead and support the team to understand processes and instructions.

Position Requirements:
A person employed in this position must be willing to respond to emergency calls at night and on weekends and carry County cell phone during off duty hours. To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A desirable combination is:
  • Experience : Five years of increasingly responsible building trades experience to include carpentry, electrical, plumbing and heating/air conditioning and groundskeeping maintenance. Previous lead or supervisory experience is highly desirable.
  • Education : Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for four years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • License or Certificate:* Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
*Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e. active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.
