The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department (PWFP) brings together a range of functions to ensure safe building construction, plan for the future needs of the County, manage infrastructure and county facilities, and protect natural resources. The Department is responsible for public works, county roads and bridges, county parks, and county facilities.

The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department seeks to fill a current Building Maintenance Worker vacancy. Under general supervision, the incumbent will perform a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of buildings, equipment and facility systems including secure facilities requiring background check and clearance, and does other related work as required.

The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis County-wide.

This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs skilled and semiskilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting and other general installation, maintenance and repair tasks of both regularly scheduled and emergency service requests.
  • Performs and assists with repairs and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment; performs routine maintenance on mechanical equipment such as lubricating, cleaning, and replacing worn or defective parts.
  • Makes routine maintenance checks on buildings and equipment and identifies needed repairs; may estimate the requirements to perform repairs; keeps records of work.
  • Maintains accurate and legible records of service requests performed, and timecard reporting.
  • Applies proper work procedures and safety practices commonly used in maintenance work.
  • May operate and maintain boilers and other heating, ventilating and building equipment.
  • May assist skilled workers in complex carpentry painting, electrical, masonry or refrigeration, heating and ventilation work.
  • May perform repair and maintenance on lock and key mechanisms on doors, desks, cabinets and other devices; provides emergency repair services; issue keys and maintain record of issuance and returns; maintain inventory of keys, key stocks and related locksmith material and equipment.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Working Knowledge of:
  • Methods and practices employed in installation, repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Tools, equipment, and materials used in building maintenance.
  • Safety practices, procedures and techniques commonly used in the building maintenance trade.
  • Hand and power tools of the locksmiths' trade, including those required to maintain alignment for proper operation of doors, latching mechanisms, locks and keyways.
Some Knowledge of:
  • Laws and building codes of the trades affecting the installation, repair, remodel, and maintenance of County facilities and equipment.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Perform a wide variety of the skilled and/or semi-skilled tasks connected with installation, repair and maintenance of County building, equipment and fixtures.
  • Use a variety of tools and equipment of the building trades skillfully and safely.
  • Identify occupational hazards and take safety precautions.
  • Understand and work from sketches and drawings.
  • Detect existing or potential problems in building equipment operation, and make proper repairs or adjustments.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain simple records.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers, members of the public and others contacted through the course of work; respond in a positive manner to supervision and direction; and attend and perform duties on a regular, reliable and consistent basis.


Examples of Experience/Education/Training

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:
1) Three years of full time paid work experience in the crafts/mechanical trades field performing installation, repair and/or maintenance on mechanical equipment and facilities in a commercial and/or industrial setting.

OR

2) A combination of training education and experience that is equivalent to the minimum qualifications listed above and that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Possess a valid California Class C driver license at the time of appointment and possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record or provide evidence of suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency; travel out of County to attend meetings.
  • Successfully pass a background investigation.
