The Sheriff 's Office is comprised of the Administration, Corrections and Enforcement Operation Bureaus. The Sheriff’s Office delivers public safety to the residents of Monterey County by providing 24-hour uniformed patrol, investigations, custody services, court security, and law enforcement support.

Position Summary
This single position class is located in the Sheriff’s Office-Enforcement Operations Bureau. The primary function of the position is to coordinate on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office the scheduling of vehicle repairs and service maintenance with Fleet Management and Information Technology. Performs minor repairs; tracks billing and performance of repair work; and performs other related work as required.

The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.

Examples of Duties

Example of Duties
  • Transports vehicles for repairs and servicing to and from Fleet Management and Information Technology.
  • Schedules the repair, routine and mandated maintenance, and installation of specialized equipment on Sheriff’s Office vehicles with minimal disruption to law enforcement services.
  • Identifies general maintenance, mechanical or electrical problems on vehicles in order to schedule and assign repair.
  • Verifies vehicle has been repaired and reported problem has been resolved.
  • Prepares and maintains inventory, service and repair records for Sheriff’s vehicles; and takes vehicle mileage at various intervals to best meet servicing schedules.
  • Installs or oversees the installation of decals on marked vehicles.
  • Assists in determining cost effectiveness of maintaining or rotating department vehicles and makes preliminary recommendations.
  • Prepares memos, status reports and statistics regarding vehicle maintenance repairs, vehicle license numbers and vehicle registration expiration dates.
  • Obtains cost estimates on labor, parts and vehicle repairs.
  • Maintains a small inventory of parts and supplies and performs routine electrical and mechanical repairs such as bad connections, replacement of fuses, spotlights and light bulbs.

The Successful Candidate
Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Working knowledge of:
  • Record keeping, filing and scheduling processes and procedures
  • General office procedures
Some knowledge of:
  • Gasoline and diesel engines and basic methods, tools and equipment used to repair and service vehicles.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Use small hand and power tools to make minor electrical and mechanical repairs and to install equipment on vehicles.
  • Understand and follow written and verbal directions.
  • Drive manual and automatic transmissions, and vans.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


Examples of Experience/Education/Training

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

Experience :
One year of experience performing light automotive repair work, maintaining related records and coursework and/or training in automotive repair.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Successfully pass a complete background/suitability process, which includes a voice stress analysis (similar to polygraph examination) and medical examination.
  • Be available to work flexible hours and be subject to being available or called in during off-duty hours, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
  • Possess a valid California Class C driver license.
