The Contra Costa County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 660 miles of roads, 150 miles of streams and channels, and over 200 County buildings. Our services include Parks and Recreation, Sandbag Distribution, Flood Control, custodial services, road and bridge maintenance, traffic management, stormwater management, facilities management, and emergency response for unincorporated areas of the County. We strive for continuous improvement, aiming to deliver cost-effective, safe, reliable, and sustainable services for the Contra Costa County community.

The Custodian II is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of County-owned and leased buildings within CCCPWD. Custodian II staff perform a range of essential duties, including cleaning floors, restrooms, and offices, removing trash, and replenishing supplies.

CCCPWD are currently recruiting to fill fourteen (14) Custodian II positions through a continuous recruitment process. This means that we are accepting applications on an ongoing basis to efficiently identify and hire qualified candidates.

  • Cleaning office areas, stocking cleaning supplies, and taking out trash and organic recyclables

  • Completing routine inspection forms
  • Ordering cleaning supplies and maintaining custodial work area

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future openings for up to six (6) months.

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience performing custodial maintenance in a commercial, industrial or public agency.

Background: Must pass a background investigation.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with a floor machine, buffing, stripping and waxing, and carpet cleaning
  • Cooperative and personal demeanor
  • Ability to remain polite and professional while completing assigned duties
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in the use of cleaning chemicals and PPE
  • A proven track record of reliable and strong work ethic


Selection Process

  • Application Filing and Evaluation: Applications for the Custodian II position will be accepted on a continuous basis.   • Filing Period: August 8, 2024, through August 31, 2024
    Applications received during this period will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the Performance Exam. This exam is tentatively scheduled for September 2024. Additional details, including the exact date, time, and location, will be provided via email.
  • Performance Exam: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited via email to participate in a Performance Exam. The Performance Exam will require candidates to perform tasks relevant to the Custodian II position. This assessment may include written, physical, and practical components to evaluate competencies related to the role. These include but not limited to: Decision Making, Adaptability, Attention to Detail, Safety Focus and Practical Cleaning Skills (Weighted 100%).
    • For applicants who submit their applications during the filing period of August 8, 2024 - August 31, 2024, the Performance Exam is tentatively scheduled for September 2024 . Additional details will be provided via email.
  • Eligible List: Candidates who achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the performance exam will be ranked and placed on the eligible list for Custodian II. This list will be established in September 2024 and used to fill current and future vacancies for Custodian II positions for up to (6) six months.
