Job Description

Minimum Qualifications
Firearms and Toolmark Examiner:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in chemical science, physical science, biological science, forensic science, or engineering science.


Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver License.
  • Texas Forensic Science Commission Forensic Analyst License (per 37 Tex. Admin. code Chapter 651 to add Subchapter C), plus completion of all required Commission-defined coursework for the discipline. All coursework must be completed and License must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.


Firearms and Toolmark Examiner Senior:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in chemical science, physical science, biological science, forensic science, or engineering science, plus three (3) years of approved independent casework, excluding training; satisfactory completion of at least two (2) years of approved ASCLD / LAB or equivalent proficiency testing; and experience in qualifying and testifying as an expert witness regarding firearm-related analysis and comparisons in State, District, or Federal court.

  • Certification through AFTE (Firearms Evidence Examination and Identification).
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver License.
  • Texas Forensic Science Commission Forensic Analyst License (per 37 Tex. Admin. code Chapter 651 to add Subchapter C), plus completion of all required Commission-defined coursework for the discipline. All coursework must be completed and License must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.
Notes to Applicants

As a key member of the Austin Forensic Science Department’s Firearms and Toolmark section, this position applies comprehensive knowledge and modern forensic principles, practices, and procedures to objectively examine, analyze, classify, and identify firearms and firearm related evidence. Support our mission in the pursuit of truth through science and outstanding service to the legal system and community of Austin. Come be part of the Austin Forensic Science Department’s Firearms team as we implement the latest 3D microscopy technology.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: Collects, prepares, packages, preserves, and processes evidence for forensic examination and analysis. Performs comparative analysis of legally-seized firearms, ammunition components, and/or weapons. Documents the unique characteristics of firearms during a forensic examination, to include thorough inspection and temporarily repairing/restoring firearms. Restores serial numbers, performs comparative analysis of gunshot residue and distance determinations. Documents all firearm and toolmark examinations performed and results obtained. Testifies to work performed in court. Educates personnel in firearm identification. Responds to major shooting incidents as needed in coordination with crime scene specialists, for collection and documentation of firearm-specific evidence.

Driving Requirement:
This position requires a valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
Pay Range
F&TE: $30.29- $37.86
F& TES : $31.81 - $39.76
Hours
7:30 a.m. to 4 00 p.m.
Monday through Friday with mandatory on-call rotation.
