The Position

Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. There are two Environmental Scientist positions open with the Bureau of Air Quality Planning. In general, Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections, enforcement, and technical support services in relation to multiple environmental programs. The positions are in the Carson City office. The first position is with the Greenhouse Gases and Mobile Sources Branch under the Bureau of Air Quality Planning. This Branch is responsible for the development and/or management of climate related projects, including Nevada's Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report and Climate Pollution Reduction Grant deliverables, as well as the management of state and federal programs for the reduction of air pollutant emissions from the transportation sector, including the Nevada Clean Diesel Program, the Diesel Emission Mitigation Fund, and the Clean Trucks and Buses Incentive Program (CTBIP). The incumbent will mainly assist in the development and programmatic administration of the CTBIP, including developing regulations, drafting implementation plans and guidance documents, reviewing applications, tracking program funds, providing progress reports, and overseeing communications from participating entities. The position may also support the Branch's efforts in managing other programs that reduce mobile source emissions. This position requires regular interaction with the public, partner agencies, regulated communities, and stakeholders.

The second position is with the Enforcement Branch. This Branch is responsible for development, management of enforcement cases, and investigations associated with enforcement cases for non-compliance with federal and state regulations. This position requires strong report writing capabilities, public speaking, and the ability to read and interpret permits and air regulations. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and three years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
