ABOUT THE ROLE

Senior Application Developers generally report to an information technology supervisor or manager and are distinguished from the Application Developer II by the more complex nature of assignments and roles assigned. They write, test, and debug complex programs in one or more languages, working from program specifications and apply in-depth knowledge of structured program design concepts and may act as a project lead, providing technical guidance to entry and journey-level application developers and other technology staff. They have an in-depth understanding of requirements analysis and possess advanced analytical skills in programming, testing, and debugging and are highly knowledgeable in the concepts, practices, and procedures of application programming. They understand and are able to apply a full range of technology concepts. Application Developers are distinguished from Information Systems Analysts in that incumbents perform programming duties and are required to have programming knowledge and experience.

Essential Job Functions

  • Analyzes, designs, develops, tests, debugs, installs, and deploys application software programs
  • Gathers software requirements and develops requirement specifications, user stories, functional and technical design specifications, user manuals, runbooks, release notes, and/or wiki pages
  • Leads in development and support of front-end software applications in the areas of user interfaces, mobility, business intelligence and reporting
  • Leads in development and support of middle-tier software applications in the areas of web services application integration, business process management, business rules, API governance, and application security
  • Leads in development and support of back-end software applications in the areas of data integration and data replication, data modeling, data security, artificial intelligence/machine learning, and database management
  • Leads in development and support of DevOps tools and automation processes in the areas of release management, configuration management, source control, continuous-integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD), and operational support
  • Performs unit, sanity, functional, integration, automated system and/or performance testing for new, modified or existing complex software applications
  • Provides professional support pertaining to application issues in Production and Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Production-Support (PS) environments
  • Researches application development tools and methodologies
  • Assists in the development and/or reviewing of solicitation documents including requests for information, requests for proposals, requests for quotes, and statements of work, as needed
  • Leads in an open collaborative environment, as needed
  • Reviews and monitors vendor performance, as needed


Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Option I

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree* in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field and three (3) years of recent**, full-time experience coding, testing, and debugging applications programs.

Option II

Four (4) years of recent**, full-time experience coding, testing and debugging application programs.

* * Recent experience is defined as full-time experience coding, testing and debugging application programs within the last 5 years.

OUT OF CLASS EXPERIENCE

No out of class experience will be accepted for this exam.

LICENSE:

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS

2 - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Part II: Multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted 55%, measuring three Professional/Technical Knowledge areas:
  • Programming Concepts covering the following topics: Algorithms, Complex Data Types, Data Access, Productivity and Quality, Program Flow, Program Structure, Programming Paradigms, User Interface, Variables, Data Types, and Operators.
  • SQL covering the following topics: Simple queries, Grouping and aggregation in SQL, Filtering and search conditions, Advanced data filtering, Data integrity, Manipulating data, Querying multiple tables, Subqueries, Using set operators, Creating databases, Views, and Transaction processing
  • RESTful Web Service covering the following topics: Architecture, REST features, Handling requests, Working with return types, Entity, translation, Producing responses, Filters and interceptors, and Security


MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

Applicants must meet the Minimum Requirements and receive a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted test part to be placed on the eligible list.

TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS
  • Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their scores automatically transferred to this examination.
  • This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test scores may be transferred.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months.
