Position Summary:

Coordinates the referral of patients to medical specialists as requested by physicians, including determining appropriate medical center affiliate to which to refer patients and obtaining pre-authorization for the referral. Acts as lead specialist on an assigned shift.

Job Requirement

Education/Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of experience in the health care field as a medical office assistant or comparable experience, one (1) year of which were in an acute care hospital.

Additional and/or Preferred Position Requirements

  • 3 years recent experience processing provider referrals, including obtaining prior authorizations either via web portal or fax
  • Recent experience auditing referrals and ensuring they are processed timely and accurately according to established performance standards
  • Supports the daily operation of the department in relation to staff training, duty assignment, metrics, reporting and other duties as assigned
  • Provides internal/external Customer service assistance as needed.
  • Epic Experience preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

Knowledge of:
Medical terminology; physician medical specialties; community medical/health care services; computers and associated software; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and procedures; handling, storage, use and disposable of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skill in:
Organizing and prioritizing work; maintaining information/data; using a personal computer and application software programs; networking with other health care organizations; communicating effectively with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic and backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, stamina to remain seated for long periods of time and maintain concentration, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or an eligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
