Seasonal Street Maintenance Worker

The City of Olathe is currently accepting applications for Seasonal Street Maintenance Worker positions. These positions last up to six months and are an excellent way to explore whether public service is for you.

No two days are alike for the City of Olathe's Street Maintenance team. Every day is different. As a Street Maintenance Worker, you'll enjoy hands-on , full-time work operating vehicles and equipment, maintaining asphalt and concrete, plowing snow, and so much more. Our Seasonal Street Maintenance Workers participate in on-the-job training which may include CDL training. They receive safety gear including boots and clothing. Starting pay in this role is $19.75/hour depending on experience.

Schedule: 7:30 AM to 4:00, Monday through Friday; Hours may vary in the Summer

The Street Maintenance Worker I is responsible for performing entry level, semi-skilled work in the inspection, construction, maintenance and repair of the city’s streets, sidewalks, alleys, medians, curbs and gutters. They complete a wide variety of duties, such as hand excavation, heavy lifting, hauling materials, operating tools and heavy equipment, etc, as part of a larger crew. This job is the first level of a three level career progression of Street Maintenance Worker I, II, and III.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs construction and maintenance activities including concrete removal, prep and finishing, asphalt removal, prep and finishing, crack seal prep and placement, poly-foam leveling, pothole repairs, and winter snow and ice maintenance operations with direct supervision and instruction; follows established procedures to repair distressed areas in streets, sidewalks, alleyways, and gutters.
  • Operates a variety of specialty equipment and vehicles to complete construction and maintenance activities including trucks, snowplows, salt spreader, hand and power tools, and lawn equipment.
  • Maintains a safe job site and work environment by ensuring proper traffic control, and safety standards as required by City, County, State and Federal regulations; works safely and collaboratively with other employees in the completion of work assignments.
  • Responds to assigned internal/external requests, updating the city’s Computerized Maintenance Management/Asset Management and Work Order Management Software as needed to maintain proper records.
  • Performs regular emergency duties, including frequent nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime hours as required to respond to emergency maintenance.


Qualifications

Experience : No experience is required.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required along with the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Licenses & Certifications : Must have a valid driver's license and favorable driving record. A class A commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements is required within six months of employment.
