The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department (PWFP) brings together a range of functions to ensure safe building construction, plan for the future needs of the County, manage infrastructure and county facilities, and protect natural resources. The Department is responsible for public works, county roads and bridges, county parks, and county facilities.

The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department is in immediate need for a Courier. Under supervision, performs delivery and messenger duties; routine clerical work; maintenance duties; maintains warehouse and inventory; and does other duties as assigned. Positions in this class perform work of a routine nature, within fixed guidelines, with a minimum of supervision. Positions in this class are distinguished from intermediate level clerical classes in that they drive vehicles on a regular basis and perform less varied clerical work.

The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis County-wide.

Examples of Duties

  • Picks up and delivers mail, interoffice messages, supplies, materials, and goods, on an established daily route, or as directed, on foot and in county vehicles.
  • Prepares packages for delivery or shipment by mail or courier.
  • Loads and unloads own vehicle; may operate a fork lift and/or hand trucks.
  • May store and arrange supplies, materials, goods, parts and equipment in warehouse; maintains warehouse in clean condition; assists in inventory and preparing records.
  • Performs various routine clerical tasks such as: computing figures, maintaining files; preparing records and reports and operating simple office appliances.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Working Knowledge of:
  • California Motor Vehicle code; safe driving practices; vehicle operation; geographic area in delivery route.
  • Storekeeping and inventory methods and procedures.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Sort mail quickly and accurately; coordinate delivery on a tight schedule.
  • Exercise discretion and judgment in caring for materials transported.
  • Drive delivery vehicles; operate forklift and/or hand truck; lift and move heavy objects weighing 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others contracted in the course of the work.
  • Learn and perform routine clerical work.

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:
Experience:
One year of work experience driving a motor vehicle, delivering supplies and/or warehouse duties

REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Possess a valid California Class C driver license at the time of appointment and possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record or provide evidence of suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency; travel out of County to attend meetings.
  • Incumbents may be required to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.
