DEFINITION:
Transcribes recorded dictation and handwritten reports involving a substantial amount of medical terminology.

Essential Job Functions

  • Transcribe routine and biopsy specimens for LA General and associated hospitals and clinics from the gross description dictated by residents.
  • Answer incoming calls, forward calls to appropriate personnel or take messages as necessary.
  • Fax reports to outside facilities when requested, in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Assist physicians and other health care professionals with requests made in-person in the Surgical Pathology offices.
  • Follow-up on outside requests for slides.
  • Accession routine and biopsy specimens for LAC+USC Medical Center and associated hospitals and clinics as needed.
  • Type final diagnoses from notes made by fellow. Make corrections to report if required.
  • Obtain and organize slides and reports for weekly Surgical Pathology Conference(s) (i.e., Breast Tumor Surgery, GI, General Tumor Board, Oncology, GU, Pulmonary, Dermatology, etc.).
  • File completed Surgical Pathology reports in numerical order, as needed.
  • Provide clerical coverage for staff who are absent or on vacation.
  • Receive and follow-up on subpoenas for Medico-legal litigation (Pathology cases).
  • Pull and file microscopic slides related to patient specimen as needed.
  • Retrieves and prepares surgical reports, slides/blocks for outside institutions when requested, in compliance with departmental policies and HIPAA guidelines.


Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Option I: Successful completion of a recognized course in medical terminology.
Course may consist of but is not limited to Basic Medical Terminology, Medical Terminology I, or Introduction to Medical Terminology.

-OR-

Option II: Six (6) months of office clerical experience involving medical terminology.
Duties that involve the regular use of medical terminology in written or verbal communication such as but not limited typing medical/operative reports, processing medical billing, intake patients' medical history, or explaining treatment procedures.

TYPEWRITING SKILL REQUIREMENT:
Ability to type at the rate of 40 net words per minute.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative form of transportation to perform the job-related essential functions of the position.

PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light:
This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

*In order to qualify under Option I, you MUST attach a legible photocopy of your official transcripts or the certificate of completion of a course in Medical Terminology from an accredited provider/institution at the time of filing or your application will be rejected. Course may consist of but is not limited to Basic Medical Terminology, Medical Terminology I, or Introduction to Medical Terminology.

EXAMINATION CONTENT :
This examination will consist of two (2) parts:

PART I : A written test weighted 100% covering Medical Terminology, Abbreviations, Definitions, Prefices, and Suffices.

THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19

PART II :
A qualifying typing performance test will be administered to candidates who successfully pass the written portion of this examination.

The following candidates are NOT required to take the County typing test:
  • Those candidates who currently hold or have held a typing position with the requisite words per minute in the service of the County of Los Angeles;
-OR-
  • Those candidates who have taken and passed a Los Angeles County typing performance test at the required words per minute administered by a County Department.
Applicants who have met the typing requirement in another department must attach a copy of their typing certificate to their application at the time of filing. Only certificates issued by a Los Angeles County Department will be accepted. If you are unable to attach the required document, you must email the document to tbuggs@dhs.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days of submitting your online application.

Applicants must meet the Minimum Requirements, achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the written test, and pass the typing performance test in order to be placed on the eligible list.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Appointees may be required to work any shift , including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
