SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Public Health Bureau’s Communicable Disease Unit (CDU) currently has two (2) openings for a Community Service Aide IV (CSA IV). The Public Health Bureau provides essential public health services including surveillance, disaster preparedness, diagnosing and addressing health problems, outreach, and education, and mobilizing community partnerships to identify, prevent and solve health problems. The CDU is responsible for preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases like Salmonellosis, E. coli infections, influenza, COVID-19, whooping cough, West Nile Virus, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. The CDU CSA IV will work under the direction of the Supervising Public Health Nurse to coordinate CSA assignments, collect and document health and exposure information, deliver health education, collect and transport biological specimens, and provide translation and interpretation services. The CSA IV will work closely with other public health professionals, the public, community service organizations, and medical professionals to coordinate public health and health services by conducting home visits, visiting medical and laboratory facilities, and attending community events.

The Eligible List established by this recruitment process will be used to fill current and future vacancies, both regular and temporary, as they arise.

This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority in accordance with the Flexible Staffing Program and Guidelines.

Examples of Duties

  • Review patient charts or records and contact patients by phone to obtain necessary information for record update.
  • Coordinate assignment of aides to ensure smooth operation of clinic support activities; coordinate patient follow up contacts; post information to medical charts; files or histories.
  • Collect data for statistical reports; establish and maintain records of new prescription contraceptives, devices, or medicines given to patients by clinic aides.
  • Coordinate Community Service Aide activities in clinics to promote optimal patient service; maintain aide clinic session assignments; delegate or recommend assignment of aides for clinic outreach activity.
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Coordinate arrangements for transportation of patients to and from clinics.

  • Familiarity with basic concepts of supervision.
  • Basic first aid principles.

Skill and Ability to:
  • Ability to set priorities and make decisions.
  • Ability to plan work and lead others.
  • Familiarity with overall clinic operation and support requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others.
  • Willingness to attend special workshops, seminars, or classes for self-improvement.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication with coworkers to provide timely and efficient flow of required information relative to patient outreach, clinic usage, and follow up.


Examples of Experience/Education/Training

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from high school or related experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:
Two years of experience performing related work that is substantially similar to the duties performed by a Community Service Aide III.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
  • Possess oral and written Spanish language proficiency.
