Position Description:
The City of Austin Safe Routes to School Program educates students on pedestrian and bicycle safety and provides adult Crossing Guards at crucial intersections to reduce barriers that prevent students from actively traveling to school.

Crossing Guards escort school children safely across the street as they walk and bike to and from school using safe crossing techniques (including raising a hand-held stop sign while crossing children), monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps for crossing and stop traffic as necessary, and alert motorists that pedestrians are in the process of using the crosswalk. Crossing Guards verbally communicate safety information to pedestrians and teach crossing rules to children while encouraging safe behavior at school crossings, as well as observe and report any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard to school children and others.
