Student Services Professional III

** Temporary/Part-Time Position (20 hours per week). **

This is a grant supported position subject to annual renewal of grant funds - no permanent appointment will be reached from this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Individual Career Counseling (40%)

Conducts comprehensive intake interviews assisting students enrolled in School of Education (SOE) graduate programs with resume/CV development, interviewing skills, job search action plans and self-assessment. Independently interprets career assessments for analysis and diagnosis to enhance career counseling. Provides one-on-one career counseling to students and alumni by assisting them to engage in the career development process and understand how the process is related to career choice and work performance by identifying, assessing, and understanding their competencies, interests, values, and personal characteristics (e.g., salary negotiation, job/internship search strategies, career transitions, LinkedIn). Develops career services and career counseling approaches for graduate student SOE populations including students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, non-traditional students, and re-entry students.

Group Facilitation and Promotion (25%)

Develops and presents culturally-relevant workshops and seminars on current career and employment related topics (e.g., resume writing, job search, interviewing, major-specific career exploration, and major-specific job and internship search). Creates appropriate multimedia resources, handouts, and written materials for all educational/training work. Coordinates career-related activities such as club events, professional panels, presentations, and seminars. Facilitates career group workshops. Promotes career services to alumni and students by means of various marketing methods, social medie-mail, and verbal communications. Establishes interactive ways to engage alumni and students in career-related technology resources. Develops and implements career education course materials.

Faculty Engagement (25%)

Serves as a primary liaison from Career Development and Alumni Engagement (CDAE) to SOE including consultation and collaboration with faculty in School of Education to support designing of courses to incorporate culturally-relevant career programming. In partnership with SOE leadership, plans and implements major-specific career-related events (e.g., panels, workshops, seminars, networking events, employer/alumni lectures). Works collaboratively with faculty to support classroom integration of career education.

Assessment and Reporting (10%)

Tracks and reports on the impact of career education interventions on retention, graduation rates, and post-graduate outcomes. Designs assessment tools to measure student learning within career education offerings.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

In partnership with CDAE team, develops initiatives for the Career Center related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Serves in an active role to advance a culture of inclusive excellence and ensure department is rooted in the core values of equity, justice, and inclusivity. Commits to providing inclusive support and resources to enable all students and alumni to seek job and internship opportunities with organizations who honor, respect and practice diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Performs additional related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences or related field, including upper division or graduate work in counseling techniques, career development theory, plus a minimum of 3-years in higher education student services field preferred in career services. Master’s degree in counseling or related field preferred.

Experience: Career counseling with graduate student experience preferred.

Other Knowledge/Skills: Ability to select, conduct, and interpret informal career assessment tools and other interactive strategies to assist students in clarifying values, personality traits, interests, and skills. Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of career related assessment instruments such as Strong Interest Inventory, Myers Briggs Type Indicator, StrengthsQuest, and Choices or Discover. Demonstrated knowledge of career development theories. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), and the ability to work collaboratively with team members and a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Demonstrated critical thinking and investigative skillsets to provide personalized, customized approaches to each individual. Embodies a student-centered philosophy to support student/alumni developmental growth. Must be organized and follow directions with minimal to moderate supervision and handle multiple tasks. Maintains confidentiality of student/alumni information (as per FERPA). Computer literate (familiar with PC applications Microsoft Word and Excel), internet savvy, and strong internet research capabilities. Knowledge of social media platforms, LinkedIn, and career services management platform. Experience conducting workshops or similar group presentations preferred.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

Hiring Range: $2,800 - $2,850 per month (20 hours per week)
