About the Position
The Scottsdale's Parks and Recreation Department oversees a wide variety of parks, recreation programs, facilities, special events, and public open spaces, all aligned with our mission of creating remarkable recreation places and experiences that support a healthy, inclusive, and active community. The department manages 45 parks, over 1,000 acres of open space, sports complexes, community centers, urban lakes, Scottsdale Stadium, Scottsdale Civic Center, and the maintenance of Old Town Scottsdale. Our new Parks & Recreation Manager will oversee the maintenance of Scottsdale Civic Center, Old Town Scottsdale, the department's citywide irrigation systems, contracts and procurement for the Parks and Recreation Department, and maintenance of citywide medians and rights-of-way. This key member of the department's leadership team will work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including Scottsdale Public Art, Scottsdale's Tourism Department, and a variety of contractors and service providers to achieve department priorities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Management or closely related field from an accredited educational institution.
  • Five years increasingly responsible experience in professional recreation.
  • Must have at least one year of Lead or Supervisory experience.
  • Experience implementing practices and procedures used in maintaining Parks and Recreation facilities and parks and recreation programs and services.
  • An equivalent combination of education and job related experience may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Licensing, Certifications, and Other Requirements
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/department/service assignment.

Essential Functions

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:

  • Supervises employees and coordinates personnel-related activities to include, but not limited to: training, approving work schedules, recommending/approving personnel actions, coaching and counseling, establishing performance goals, and writing performance evaluations.
  • Prepares assigned annual program budgets and reviews.
  • Monitors and controls budget expenditures and variances throughout the year to ensure funds are available to spend.
  • Prepares comprehensive reports and assists in presentations to the Assistant City Manager concerning all operational issues.
  • Makes presentations to Parks and Recreation commissions, City Council and external organizations.
  • Produces monthly reports on all activities to ensure goals and objectives are being met.


Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Most work is performed in a City office environment, with regular site visits to, parks, satellite areas, and recreation facilities.
  • Walks or moves, stands, bends and accesses paved, gravel or turf park areas to inspect the program areas.
  • Occasional exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, inclement weather, temperature extremes, traffic hazards and unpleasant odors.
  • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment including computer, telephone, key calculator, copy and fax machine requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement.
  • Travel to/from meetings and various City locations.
