Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

This is a technically skilled work program lasting up to three years in maintenance and repair of the City's fleet of equipment. Work involves servicing and repairing cars, trucks, construction equipment, emergency and other automotive related equipment. Work is performed under the general direction of the Crewleader, and Supervisor. Work is assigned orally or through work orders. This position will be required to work overtime and to be on call during storm or emergency situations.

The Apprentice - Operations Division - Fleet will receive training and instruction to learn the essential job functions of a Mechanic I. In addition, the Apprentice will accompany and assist the Fleet mechanics in the maintenance and repair of the City's fleet of equipment.

This is a full time, benefited, temporary position and will last for a duration of up to three (3) years. The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. The City of Westminster has a Multilingual Stipend Program to encourage and reward benefited employees who are conversationally fluent in languages other than English. Benefited employees have the opportunity to test their language proficiency skills and qualify for a bi-weekly stipend that will vary based on the employee’s level of proficiency and usage.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of principles and repair methods of internal combustion engines, transmissions/drivelines and electrical fuel systems
  • Fabricate and weld with electric and gas welders

JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
1. Performs duties under the supervision of the Crewleader
2. Performs routine preventative maintenance work such as oil changes and chassis lubrication on cars, trucks and construction equipment
3. Diagnoses problems as well as repairs or replaces various equipment
  • Diagnosing problems in electrical, fuel, and hydraulic systems and in various mechanical components
  • Repairing and/or rebuilding engines, transmissions, differentials, drivelines, brakes, gearboxes, hydraulic and fuel systems and related automotive systems and components
  • Repairing automotive and truck tires
  • Performing field and on-the-road repairs as required in varied weather conditions
  • Replacing non-repairable items such as shocks, tires, bulbs and brake shoes
4. Fabricates and welds with electric and gas welders and makes cuts with gas torch
5. Possesses a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment
6. Possesses or obtains within six (6) months of employment a valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License, Class A with no air brake restrictions and safe driving record
7. Maintains regular and punctual attendance
Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion
Other Duties and Responsibilities
1. Cleans shop area and vehicles as necessary
2. Test-drives a variety of vehicles upon completion or repair
3. Picks up and delivers vehicles to and from outside vendors

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
Required :
  • Graduation from high school or completion of GED
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment
  • Possess or obtain within six (6) months of employment a valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License, Class A with no air brake restrictions and safe driving record
  • Ability to pass required DOT physical every two (2) years or as specified by the DOT
  • Ability to obtain one (1) ASE Certification, per year, during the Apprenticeship
Preferred :
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an automotive mechanic
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
Physical Requirements
This position is physical in nature and requires sufficient physical stamina and strength to:

  • Occasional sitting to perform office tasks and test drive vehicles; Constant standing to perform various repair and vehicle maintenance; Frequent walking through single level repair shop to pick up equipment and supplies
  • Frequent squatting to inspect vehicles; Occasional bending at the waist to perform routine maintenance and major repair; Occasional kneeling, climbing, balancing, reaching below shoulder and twisting; Constant reaching overhead to perform tasks under vehicle
  • Constant light, firm grasp, fine manipulation and handling for daily office duties, minor and major repair
  • Constant step up/down and actuate mechanism to safely enter/exit and operate vehicles
  • Constant near/far acuity and hearing to perform vehicle inspections, identify mechanical problems and communicate with employees and citizens
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of up to fifty (50) pounds to move equipment and supplies to work area; Occasional pushing/pulling of up to sixty (60) pounds of material on a cart or dolly

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is constantly performed indoor and occasionally outdoor with constant exposure to extreme weather. This work is performed year-round in the repair shop and in the field under inclement and severe weather and working conditions. Working conditions include close proximity to moving vehicles, mechanical parts, and to heavy equipment. Exposure to exhaust and other fumes, odors, dust, noise, and vibrations does exist. Must be able to drive or learn to drive a wide-range of vehicles and equipment with automatic and manual transmissions
Required Materials and Equipment
Hand tools and power tools, electric and gas welders, and gas-cutting torch. Test equipment such as voltmeters, emissions test equipment, pressure testers, engine analyzers, and front-end alignment machine. Personal computer based vehicle monitoring software, telephones and photocopy machines.
