The City of Murrieta is accepting applications for the position of Communications Intern (Part-Time) to fill one (1) current vacancy. The ideal candidate will be committed to providing exceptional customer service, upholding the public interest, and being a part of the community vision. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to one (1) year.

DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, assists with citywide communications and public education and outreach; drafts and coordinates written communication and photography/videography content for social media postings, newsletters, press releases and website content. Working hours per week are flexible and typically average twenty (20) hours per week, not to exceed twenty-five (25) per week or 960 per fiscal year. This internship is designed for up to one year in duration.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from supervisory or management personnel. No supervision of staff is exercised.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares written communications for social media posts, news releases, video scripts and various content related to the City's public education and outreach efforts.
  • Coordinates video and photography opportunities, including scheduling, writing scripts, production and editing.
  • Assists with the conceptualization and implementation of public involvement, public information, social media and marketing campaigns.
  • Updates and maintains the City's content management systems and social media outlets to disseminate information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in a Bachelor's degree program, or Master's degree program; or
  • Recent graduate (within the past three (3) years) from a Bachelor's or Master's degree program
Degree program should include major coursework in communications, public relations, public policy or a related field.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a valid CA Class C driver's license or other means that would allow for travel to various City locations, meeting or trainings.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Various social media platforms.
  • Working knowledge of or strong willingness to learn to use content management software to manage content of City websites.
  • Website and graphic design.
  • Basic photo and video editing tools and software.
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Suite and use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint with the willingness to learn other software tools.
  • City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer and to operate a motor vehicle to visit various City and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

N/A - THIS IS A PART-TIME, NON-BENEFITED POSITION.

The City does not belong to the Social Security system. Therefore, enrollment in the PARSARS 457 retirement program is mandatory and requires a contribution of 7.5% of base earnings. The City contributes 1.3%, and the employee contributes 6.2% of base earnings; contributions are made each pay period on a pre-tax basis.

Pursuant to the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB 1522), eligible part-time employees will accrue 40 hours or five (5) days of paid sick leave each fiscal year for a maximum accrual of 80 hours. This paid sick leave is available to the employee on the 90th day of employment.

Part-time shifts for all temporary/part-time employees must not exceed 980 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30).
