The Position

Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.

Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is recruiting for a Psychiatric Nurse 3 (PN3) at Desert Willow Treatment Center (DWTC) located in Las Vegas, Nevada, a 24 hour, 7 days a week inpatient psychiatric hospital that provides mental health treatment for children ages 12 through 17. This position ensures that safe and effective patient care to severely emotionally disturbed children is being provided; assures compliance with nursing standards, the Joint Commission accreditation standards, Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance licensing standards, and DCFS policies. The PN3 serves as a first-line supervisor including providing work direction, resolving patient care and staffing issues, assign and review work, establish work performance standards, evaluate performance and provide counseling and discipline to subordinate professional staff; Monitors day-to-day work activities of direct care staff assigned to the unit to maintain a safe, healthy, and therapeutic environment for patients; Assists the PN IV and Director of Nursing with administrative tasks; Assists in developing and monitoring discipline specific competencies; overseeing the tracking of all mandatory training for nursing staff; provides orientation, training and education to all new and existing nursing staff; Responsible for staff scheduling and ensuring safe and adequate staff-to-patient ratios on all patient care units.

Incumbents also plan, implement, and evaluate the nursing care delivered to patients; Identify patient mental and physical health care needs and make comprehensive clinical evaluations; provide input and recommendations regarding nursing care and services; initiate and carry out therapeutic, educational, social, and physical care activities; administer medications as prescribed and monitor patients for medication side effects and/or allergic reactions; monitor patients for safety; document patient observations and the effectiveness of planned program activities. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and three years of professional nursing experience, two of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities; OR one year of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes A bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience. Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
