  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year of experience in a field related to the job.

The Library Security Specialist position is responsible for the safety and security for staff, vendors/contractors, and the public. The individual in this position will monitor behavior in the library to ensure all individuals adhere to our policies. Security personnel are to be welcoming, respectful, and professional at all times.

Driving Requirement:
  • This position requires a valid Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.


ON- CALL / CALL BACK RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Position requires on-call or call-back responsibilities.


WORK HOURS :
  • Shift may change according to departmental needs. Work hours may include after-hours, holidays, and weekend work.


ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL
  • This position is categorized as essential personnel. Essential personnel are required to come to work during emergencies or bad weather at the airport if they are scheduled to work and in some cases when they are not scheduled.


OVERTIME :
  • Overtime may be required with or without notice.


SHIFT INCENTIVE
  • Shift work includes shift differential incentives for evening and night shifts and weekends.


VETERAN :
  • Veteran candidates will be required to provide a copy of their DD214 at the time of the interview.


LANGUAGE :
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and fluently speak in English.

Pay Range
$21.78 - $24.50 per hour
Hours
Shift Work - Full Time/40-hours per week.

Preferred Experience:
  • Customer Service Experience.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to use a computer to type reports, check emails and respond to other notifications.
  • Knowledge of CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) monitoring.
  • Operation of two-way radio.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, including children and adults.
  • Knowledge of alarm codes, access cards and security keys inventory.
  • Ability and willingness to work shifts which include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry items weighting up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


Conducts security patrols at branch locations, other Library facilities, parking lots/garages, and surrounding areas for unsafe conditions and reports them as necessary. Responds to fire alarms, security alarms, and accidents - contacts appropriate emergency personnel. Investigates disturbances and in the event of an emergency, maintains order and safety of occupants. Provides customer service and acts as a source of information and assistance to inform the public of information regarding Library services, programming, policy and regulations. Anticipates, de-escalates, and solves problems and/or provides reports to appropriate agency. Monitors welfare of security personnel working after-hours, overnight, and at remote assignments. Provides direction and training to security personnel, contract employees, and other City departments regarding Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and other training areas. Issues and enforces Criminal Trespass Notices for violations and determines if police assistance is needed. Completes and maintains incident reports and other routine documentation. Directs traffic and provides crowd control and security services for after-hours events held by internal and external customers. Transports and safeguards cash pick up and drop offs at all Library locations.
