Job Summary

Under the general direction and leadership of the Associate Director, the incumbent will provide comprehensive and holistic intake, referrals, and linking of services to serve the disability-related needs of students enrolled at CSULB who have a qualified disability and require access to programs and services. Incumbent will work across programs and serve as the primary contact for prospective and newly admitted students and will review highly sensitive and confidential disability documentation, determine reasonable accommodations, and provide on-going disability management support. The Accommodations and Retention Counselor assesses and determines the nature and extent of a wide variety of disabilities, needed accommodations, and required support services. Incumbent advises students regarding classroom accommodations and disability-related challenges related to education/career options and choices including consulting with faculty regarding student needs and disability related course concerns. Interprets federal and state laws and regulations to students, faculty, and the campus-at-large. The incumbent will serve as a resource for students, staff, and faculty regarding the purpose, operation, and services for BMAC and provides disability management and academic support workshops for all BMAC students. Incumbent coordinates programs that support outreach and ensure the delivery of high-quality services for students, faculty and staff and provide coordination for various BMAC held events and student led disability awareness and advocacy.

Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct disability management counseling and participate in the Interactive Process with students with disabilities, including a focus on Pregnant & Parenting Students, as assigned.
  • Support student retention through BMAC training and programming efforts. Participate in SOAR programming efforts, workshops, and providing accommodation support for incoming students with disabilities.
  • Provides implementation of BMAC services (e.g. notetaking, Smart pen, tutoring, accessible parking, accessible furniture, scooter requests, standardized exam/information release requests), in addition to the coding of BMAC students and assisting with data collection.

Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement special events, programs, and activities. Experience making presentations to prospective students and other audiences. Demonstrated skill in assisting and speaking with persons of various ages, socio-economic, cultural and/or education backgrounds. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships & communicate clearly & effectively with students, staff, faculty, administrators, vendors, Campus Partners, state officials, and the public. General knowledge of CSU/CSULB admissions requirements and procedures; academic offerings; and student support services highly preferred. Proven ability to learn, interpret, apply, and develop a wide variety of university policies and procedures relating to high-level office administration standards, policies, and issues. Ability to research and interpret CSU and campus policy, as required. Excellent oral and written communication skills to compose and proofread professional level copy of letters, proposals, reports, meeting notes, invitations, and announcements. Incumbent must have experience processing, answering and following-up as needed with office mail, phone calls, email and in-person visitors. Must be able to respond to complex inquiries from the public, residents, parents, prospective residents, CSULB employees and students.

Ability to coordinate, organize and demonstrate command of a complex and continuously changing array of information, dates, places, and people in a systematic way to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort in the process of completing administrative support projects. Skill in developing, implementing, and assuring compliance with office and University policies and procedures while maintaining good working relationships with staff at all levels within and external to the University. Demonstrated skill in conducting research, developing reports, and presenting findings.

Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations, practices, and procedures to define problem or objective, identify relevant concerns or factors, formulate logical objective conclusions, recognize alternatives and their implications and in generating solutions to problems as they arise. Skill in sound time management including prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner. Flexibility with changes in workload, under pressure of deadlines, competing requirements, heavy workload, and constant interruptions. Skill in working independently with minimal direction, in setting priorities and schedules and in identifying and adhering to departmental objectives.

Ability to apply independent, reasoned judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and technically accurate solutions. Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential matters with tact and diplomacy, and to maintain confidentiality of information as needed or to protect the rights of individuals or the University. Must have strong knowledge and experience with PC. Experience with a broad range of Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) and Adobe software to ensure that incumbent will be able to prepare a wide variety of correspondence, reports, forms, brochures, flyers, agendas, minutes, advertisements and text for printed materials and web pages. Ability to operate office equipment such as fax machines; copiers; calculators; overhead and LCD projectors; scanners, etc. Experience planning and working at special events.

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

PREFERRED:

• Master’s degree in educational counseling or related field, preferred.

• At least 2 years professional experience and knowledge in working with students with disabilities and programming, especially with students with disabilities in a 4-year university setting.

• Possess a valid California Driver's License to drive University vehicle.

•Ability to work some weekends and evenings.

• Must be available to work until 7:00 p.m. on an assigned day.

Physical Summary

Light work - Job involves some lifting of medium weight objects (10-20 pounds) and/or 10% - 20% of the job involves standing or walking.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $4,841 - $5,000 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,841 - $6,884 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
