DEFINITION
Receives, processes and serves legal process and notices for the Court Services Division of the Sheriff's Department.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocated to this class receive administrative and technical direction from designated sworn staff regarding the receipt, processing and service of legal process. With the exception of Court orders and arrest warrants, these documents include summonses, subpoenas, and orders to appear. Incumbents must demonstrate knowledge of applicable forms and documents, and the civil and criminal codes to provide the public with information relative to procedures and laws governing process. In addition, incumbents are responsible for verification of authority, procedure, and time limitations for legal documents to be served and must exercise independent judgment and initiative in the receipt, processing and service of legal process.

Essential Job Functions

Receives and examines process documents to verify completeness, authority, procedure, and time limitations.

Provides information to the public, via a public counter or in the field, regarding procedures and laws governing process in response to requests for information or process served.

Processes various legal documents by preparing forms with complete and accurate information extracted from various sources, obtaining necessary signatures, attaching appropriate copies of requested records, and ensuring the receipt, filing, and/or service of the complete document upon the appropriate parties or jurisdiction within statutory time limits.

Serves, in person, legal process such as summonses, complaints, subpoenas, and orders to appear.

Identifies person(s) upon whom process is served and may describe and identify said persons in court.

Testifies in court regarding actions taken to locate persons served and presents evidence to demonstrate exercise of due diligence.

Verifies and receives required fees in compliance with departmental policies, procedures and laws governing said assessments.

Operates County vehicles and radio equipment, utilizing approved codes and procedures, and reports the need for maintenance and/or repair, as necessary.

Maintains records and statistics, logs and forms on activities; completes appropriate data entry/retrieval tasks using the Modified Automated Process and Accounting System (MAPAS) or other automated system; and prepares appropriate reports as necessary.

Plans daily routes and activities to ensure efficient and expedient process within an assigned geographical area.

Transports court files and evidence, as necessary.

Provides non-armed office security by reporting any unusual occurrences or requests for assistance to a supervisor or other sworn personnel or by monitoring A-phones and security video monitors, as required.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
No training or experience is required. Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment.

LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a valid California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing. Out-of-state applicants will be required to obtain a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

LICENSE INFORMATION:
Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of a computerized multiple choice test covering filing, checking for errors, vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension, written expression, customer service, planning & organizing, computer skills, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and verbal communication skills, weighted 100%.

TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS
Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their responses automatically transferred to this examination.

This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test responses may be transferred.

THE MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months following the date of promulgation.

Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job-related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at-fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (Department) has a “zero tolerance” policy for its employees for the following:

  • use of narcotics, controlled substance and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.


Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
