Part-time positions are at-will and can end with or without notice based on the City’s needs. Temporary part-time employees can work up to 1000 hours between July 1 and June 30 each year and up to 28 hours per week. They are not classified as civil service. Part-time assignments do not have guaranteed hours, and employees work a mutually beneficial schedule for both the employee and the hiring department.

A 5% salary increase will take effect on October 1, 2024, for all general bi-weekly job classifications .

POSITION

Under general supervision, assists in the preparation of plans and specifications and the inspection of capital improvement construction projects.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
  • Knowledgeable of applicable City, state, regional, and Federal statutes, rules, ordinances, codes, and regulations governing public works operations; engineering and construction principles and practices relating to public works; and of occupational hazards and safety guidelines;
  • Skilled in documenting projects specifications and actions, and maintaining files and records;
  • Ability to perform essential duties with minimum supervision, to effectively communicate verbally and in writing in English to all levels staff and the public;
  • Proficient in operating personal computer hardware, electronic devices, and software such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and other industry-related software;


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. Work may require frequent standing, walking, climbing, and bending; May be exposed to repetitive motion, vision to monitor, extreme temperatures and weather, and construction sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review plans and specifications of assigned public works construction projects to gain familiarity with the project prior to inspection.
  • Determines quality of materials and workmanship and compliance with plans, specifications, estimates, and all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Inspects sewer mains, storm drains, streets, alleys, sidewalks, driveways, parks and park facilities construction;
  • Inspects mix, placement of and finished concrete and asphalt improvements, and various underground sub-structures, pipelines, etc.
  • Inputs, updates, and maintains accurate inspection records.
  • Conducts field observations and inputs information into drawings;
  • Prepares construction plan reproductions and gathers office information and documents from the Engineering Division for use in the field.


QUALIFICATIONS

Associate Arts Degree in Public Works, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field or equivalent certification [i.e., Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII) or Public Works Inspection] , AND three years of progressively responsible work experience in technical/civil capital improvement or construction inspections. All incumbents must maintain a valid California Driver’s License.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Consists of an application review to ensure that all applicants meet the minimum requirements for the job classification. A select number of qualified applicants will be invited to an interview with the Hiring Authority. All employment offers are contingent on criminal background review via fingerprint submission for applicants over 18 years of age and provision of evidence of freedom from tuberculosis. Every individual the City employs must complete and sign the US Government form I-9 and provide documentation required by law showing that s/he is eligible to work in the United States.
