Currently there is one full-time Department Assistant vacancy in the Fire Department at City Hall. This position will primarily perform duties related to customer service, including but not limited to, answering phone calls, helping customers at the counter, responding to voicemails, billing assistance, and Public Records Act Requests. This position will also assist staff with various projects and tasks, including certification renewals for staff, preparation of onboarding or training documents, and compiling records and statistics.

Selection Components:

1. Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review of applications on July 24 , 20 24, or at 150 applications - whichever occurs first . In order for the application package to be considered complete, candidates are required to attach a resume to their online application.

2. Online Skills Exam: T entatively scheduled for the week of July 29 , 2024. Top-scoring applicants who pass the examination will be invited to a virtual interview.
3. Virtual Interview: Tentatively scheduled for the week of August 13, 2024. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future full-time and part-time Department Assistant vacancies as they occur throughout the City.

Schedule: This position is able to work a 5/40 or 9/80 schedule.

Career Path
This is the fully qualified journey-level classification in the Administrative Support series. The series includes Office Assistant, Department Assistant and Administrative Assistant.

Salary:
Department Assistant Full- Time : $4,521 - $6,675 (monthly)
Department Assistant Part- Time : $24.54 - $36.27 ( hourly)

Retirement:

The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 11.5% of pay towards the retirement benefit.

Experience & Education and License/Certificate

A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Three or more years of increasingly responsible secretarial and clerical experience.

Education: Equivalent to completion of high school, supplemented by coursework or training in word processing and spreadsheet software programs, and work planning and management.

License/Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

May be required to obtain CPR, First Aid, and/or AED (Automated external defibrillator) certifications within six months of hire.
