Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus (6) years experience in maintenance and/or construction, including (3) years experience in the operation of heavy duty equipment and (2) years experience in lead/supervisory capacity.


Licenses or Certifications:

  • Licensed for the operation of commercial vehicles in the state of Texas within 120 days of employment.
  • Good driving record required.
  • To be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Austin Drug Policy.

Overview of the Position:
This position works in the Transportation and Public Works Department, Pavement & Infrastructure Division. This position is assigned to the Sealcoat work group with a primary roll to supervise a Street & Bridge Operations work crew responsible for sealcoat city streets. This position will also support the Mill and Overlay and Fog Seal group as needed.

Driving Requirement:
This position requires Licensed for the operation of commercial vehicles in the state of Texas within one hundred and twenty (120) days of employment. If you have a current out of state Driver License/Commercial driver License, you will be required to obtain a valid Texas Class “A” or “B” license within 120 days of date of hire.

External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

To be considered for employment in this position, applicants must comply with Department of Transportation federal regulations and the City of Austin Alcohol and Drug Policy for Commercial Vehicle Drivers, including alcohol and drug testing as required.

Additional Information:

This position is considered “Essential” to maintain critical operations and core services, including public health, safety and utility services, in the event of an emergency. This means employees in this position will be required to report to work even in the event of bad weather, natural disaster, or other unforeseen circumstances that necessitate an emergency closure of City operations.

This position may require a skills assessment.

This position will require a pre-employment Criminal Background Investigation ( CBI ).

Pay Range
$28.85 - $36.06

  • Experience leading road and/or highway construction projects.
  • Experience conducting the full range of supervisory responsibilities: (hiring, training, developing, managing performance, motivating, team building, conflict management, etc.)
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and Power point.)
  • Experience using work order management software.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Assigns and coordinates work crews in performing planned construction and maintenance work on pipelines, storm drain concrete and detection and water quality ponds to produce a finished product to required standards. Ensures traffic control is set up in construction zones. Ensures drainage right of way as generated by customer services requests ( CSE ). Monitors daily work sheets, vehicle inspection sheets and vehicle accidents. Ensures work and safety standards are being maintained and schedules are being met. Investigates and responds to citizen complaints. Ensures vehicles and equipment are maintained as necessary. Writes routine correspondence and communicate as needed with employees, other divisions and departments.

Responsibilities- Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:
  • Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.
  • May fill in for absent crew leaders and assist crews in performing their work.

  • Knowledge of the provisions in the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of motorized equipment on public streets and highways.

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, equipment, and materials used in the construction and maintenance of water drainage operations.
