Job Description

Job Summary

Under the general guidance of the Director, Learning Assistance Center the incumbent serves as one of three professional staff dedicated to overseeing the effective implementation of the Supplemental Instruction program, which supports students in low completion rate courses, and entering students identified as academically at risk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise Student Instructional Assistants (SI Leaders). Mentor them professionally in and out of the classroom. Assist in both pre-semester and in-semester trainings.
  • Coordinate the delivery of Supplemental Instruction classes, maintain currency on the learning needs of SI target populations; maintain currency with respect to best practices nationally in SI. Assist with hiring and supervising SI leaders, planning and implementing SI Orientation and in-service training activities and with securing materials for SI Leaders' activities.
  • Assist with program assessment.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the practices needed to effectively deliver methods of training and guiding student leaders in learning principles to address academically at-risk students and to meet the challenges of low completion rate courses. Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills (both oral and written) essential to effective interaction with primarily SI leaders and student clients. Ability to analyze complex factors at a basic level to develop and implement effective collaborative services. Excellent organizational skills. Proficient with technological tools utilized in an office setting (computer, word processing software, copier, etc.). Maintains a safe work environment.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two years of professional Student Services employment required.

• Graduate degree strongly preferred.

• Direct experience in teaching, tutoring, or SI experience preferred.

• Experience with SI program, including prior experience as an SI Leader strongly preferred.

Compensation

This appointment is for an 11/12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $4,438 - $4,500 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. (Remove this if ASM does not add salary note)

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,438- $6,310 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

  • Light work - Job involves some lifting of medium weight objects (10-20 pounds) and/or 10% - 20% of the job involves standing or walking.
