The Position

Certified Nursing Assistants perform basic restorative services and basic nursing services related to the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, basic mental health and protection of patient rights.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

This position is located at High Desert State Prison. Certified Nursing Assistants perform several key responsibilities. Primary duties include patient assessment and documentation, where the CNA collects, reports, and records basic health data, and provides direct patient care under the supervision of RN or LPN. This includes assisting with activities of daily living such as toileting, bathing, dressing, and feeding. The CNA also responds to call lights, assists with food trays, and helps with filing and restocking supplies, ensuring all tasks align with the Nevada State Board of Nursing Practice Act and departmental regulations. Other responsibilities involve adherence to safety and OSHA guidelines, maintaining clean and safe environment, and evaluating patient care equipment for safety. The CNA must display professionalism and excellent customer service, maintain confidentiality, and cooperate with staff and inmates. Strong work ethic, computer skills, and proficiency with necessary programs are essential, as well as performing clerical duties and special projects as needed to support the nursing staff and ensure effective functioning of the infirmary. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant by the Nevada State Board of Nursing and six months of experience performing work as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Nursing Assistant Trainee; OR six months as a Certified Nursing Assistant I in Nevada State service. The six months of job related experience may be part of a formal Certified Nursing Assistant training program. Special Notes Probationary employees working for the Department of Corrections must successfully complete the required hours of "pre-service" training provided by the department. Probationary employees working for the Department of Corrections must successfully complete 40 hours of "pre-service" training provided by the department. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, some positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to pre-employment screening for controlled substances. Certification as a Nursing Assistant by the Nevada State Board of Nursing is required at the time of application and as a condition of continuing employment for the Certified Nursing Assistant I, II and III. Some positions require current CPR certification at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
