The Position

Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Sustainable Materials Management (BSMM) is hiring for Environmental Scientist positions in the Carson City, Nevada office as either a compliance and enforcement inspector or permit writer. This will underfilling for the Environmental Scientist 3 position.

As a member of the Compliance and Enforcement Team, the individual will be responsible for compliance inspections and enforcement actions for solid and hazardous waste. As an inspector in the Compliance and Enforcement Branch, the candidate will research and develop/maintain monitoring and inspection programs to ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations associated with the management of waste in Nevada. The candidate will be primarily responsible for conducting inspections of waste management facilities and responding to complaints. As a member of the Permitting Team, the individual will be responsible for evaluating permit applications, writing permits for solid and hazardous waste management facilities, evaluating environmental monitoring reports, and periodically performing inspections. The position may also work with the sustainability program in various capacities in an effort to bolster sustainability in the State. The successful applicant will gain experience in permit writing, compliance inspections and reporting, regulation review, and database development. Depending on the successful candidate's background, they may assist in regulation writing. The selected candidate may be assigned additional duties as required to support the overall mission of BSMM and Division. Telework is currently not available. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and 18 months of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and three and a half years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR 18 months of experience as an Environmental Scientist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
