The Position

Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

This position is located at High Desert State Prison. The Correctional Nurse 2 position entails a range of essential responsibilities. Key duties include patient assessment and nursing care planning, where the nurse collects and documents medical conditions, completes nursing assessments, and develops care plans to address patient needs. Direct patient care involves setting priorities based on patient acuity, participating in patient education, promoting health and independence, and ensuring proper charting. The role also requires assisting staff, acting as a charge nurse, organizing and delegating tasks, and serving as a resource and role model for subordinate staff. The nurse attends multidisciplinary meetings, participates in cost-effective initiatives, and serves on committees such as Infection Control and Quality Improvement. Ensuring OSHA compliance and providing a safe and hygienic environment are critical, as is supervising inmate workers and undertaking additional tasks like medication recording and infection control. Professionalism, strong work ethic, customer service, effective communication, and proficiency with necessary computer programs are also vital components of the role. These duties must be performed in accordance with NV State Board of Nursing Practice Act and departmental regulations, policies and procedures. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) License as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which was in a correctional or institutional setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or Associates degree in nursing and one year of experience. Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of employment. Probationary employees must successfully complete pre-service training (PST) provided by the department. As a condition of appointment and continuing employment, positions are subject to call-back, overtime on short notice, stand-by status, and must work various hours and/or shifts including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Special Requirements A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Some positions require a valid driver's license at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
