The Department of Art, Media, and Design at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Fall 2024 to teach AMD 414: Design and Invention. The course meets on Wednesdays, from 5:30 to 9:20 p.m. and encompasses both lecture and lab. Successful candidates will possess a background in developing strong design concepts and in employing “design thinking” to address challenging problems.

Course Description

Explores methods of creative development from concept to visual design. Emphasizes imagination as a tool for invention with design as the conduit for the development and articulation of new concepts. Incorporates hands-on development and computer graphics technologies. Draws on historical and contemporary examples of invention with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary development of ideas. Explores ways in which design concepts can be realized through design thinking and project work. Includes design activities, research, design management, and individual and group projects.

Minimum qualifications:
  • A master's degree or equivalent art and design experience
  • Knowledge of design and prototyping (or making)
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Current portfolio of art/media/design
  • Experience teaching art or design at the University level
  • Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Versed in the history of design thinking and invention, with a unique creative practice that involves prototyping of some kind
  • Artists and designers whose practice addresses social issues are encouraged to apply
  • Two years of teaching experience at the university level
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,007 - $8,000 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,007 - $12,594 per full-time month
