Pay Range: $25.55/hr. - $31.94hr.

This recruitment is to fill two (2) vacancies.

A Consumer Health Specialist job is available with the City of Fort Worth Environmental Health Services Department Consumer Health Division. The Consumer Health Division performs comprehensive consumer and environmental health work including the reviewal of building plans, issuance of health permits, and conducing routine health inspections of; food establishments, childcare centers, public pools, food trucks, hotels, and temporary events. A Consumer Health Specialist investigates foodborne illnesses and other complaints filed by the general public regarding consumer or environmental health issues. Lastly, the Division’s Mosquito Surveillance program protects the public by preventing the spread of West Nile virus.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university including at least thirty (30) semester hours or its equivalent in a basic or applied science per the Texas Administrative Code (TAC).
  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible consumer health, regulatory or related experience. Such as; food service, food manufacturing, vector control, public pool management/maintenance, or childcare experience.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Texas Professional Sanitarian (R.S.) or Registered Environmental Health Sanitarian (R.E.H.S.) License within twelve months of employment.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Candidate selected for hire must pass Pre-Employment Drug Screen, Physical, and Criminal Background check.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental science, biological science, public health, food science or a related field preferred.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have Spanish/English bi-lingual skills

The Consumer Health Specialist job responsibilities include:
  • Conduct health inspections of food establishments, childcare centers, public swimming pools, food trucks, hotels, and temporary events.
  • Investigate suspected foodborne illnesses and other complaints filed by the general public regarding consumer or environmental health issues
  • Review building plans and conduct plans examinations of new and remodeled food establishments, child care facilities, public swimming pools, hotels, and food trucks.
  • Issue citations or permit suspensions when necessary. Attend City of Fort Worth Municipal Court proceedings.
  • Conduct consumer and environmental health education programs to the public regarding proper food handling, illness prevention and sanitation, and pool operation and maintenance as well as various consumer and environmental health procedures.
  • Organize and coordinate special event assignments, including scheduling and interagency coordination.
  • Participate in the mosquito surveillance program to help prevent the spread of West Nile Virus.

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.

Physical Demand

Medium work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
