The Department of Aging and Adult Services/Office of the Public Guardian is recruiting for Deputy Public Guardians and Deputy Public Guardian Trainees who arrange for custodial care and administer estates of gravely disabled or other incompetent persons appointed to the Public Guardian by the courts. Deputy Public Guardian Trainees work under close supervision while acquiring the necessary skills and experience to qualify for promotion to Deputy Public Guardian . Deputy Public Guardians serve as conservators of conservatee's property and financial assets, and coordinate legal or social services on behalf of conservatees; investigate newly appointed conservatorship cases; interview family members, physicians, psychiatric social workers, lawyers, and others to assess needs of conservatees; consult with physicians, community social services or health care services to arrange for placement of conservatees; personally place conservatees in care facilities; and transport to court hearings when required.

Range 56: $68,099 - $93,579 annually

Deputy Public Guardian Trainee
Range 54T: $64,792 - $86,985 annually

Promotion: Incumbents in the class of Deputy Public Guardian Trainee are eligible for promotion to Deputy Public Guardian ($5,674- $7,798 monthly) upon completing the trainee period and receipt of a satisfactory Work Performance Evaluation. Incumbents must be promoted within twelve (12) months of hire or be terminated.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Background Investigation: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation, which includes fingerprinting, credit check, and/or medical exam, which may include drug and/or TB testing.

Working Conditions: Incumbents in this class will occasionally work in odorous, pest-infested areas. They may also be required to lift and carry conservatee's personal belongings, which may weigh up to sixty (60) pounds.

Travel: Travel throughout the State is required. Occasional out-of-state travel is required and applicants must be able to travel by airplane. Incumbents may be required to make provision for transportation and to use personal vehicles (mileage reimbursement is available). A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained for the individual providing the transportation.

Work Schedule: Work schedule may require availability for after hour referrals, night duty, and weekend shifts.

CA Certification Training: Incumbents must complete forty (40) units of CA State Association of Public Administrators, Public Guardian, and Public Conservators training within a four (4) year period.

Work Location: Incumbents will be assigned to work at the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) located at 686 E. Mill St. San Bernardino, CA 92415-0647. Office location may change due to space and department operational needs. New office may be located in the East (San Bernardino/Colton) or West (Fontana/Rancho) Valley of San Bernardino County.

Applicants must meet one of the following:
Option A: Possess a Bachelor's degree in Public/Business Administration, Behavioral/Social Science, or closely related field of study.

Option B: Possess an Associate's degree, or equivalent completed college coursework, in Public/Business Administration, Behavioral/Social Science or closely related field of study -AND- three (3) years of experience in a legal, fiscal, or law enforcement setting performing relatively complex duties which are non-routine in nature and require exercising independent decision making.

Deputy Public Guardian
Applicants must meet one of the following:
Option A: Possess a Bachelor's degree in Public or Business Administration, Behavioral or Social Science, or closely related field of study -AND- one (1) year of experience in a legal, fiscal, or law enforcement setting performing relatively complex duties which are non-routine in nature and require exercising independent decision making.

Option B: Possess an Associate's degree, or equivalent completed college coursework, in Public or Business Administration, Behavioral or Social Science or closely related field of study -AND- four (4) years of experience in a legal, fiscal, or law enforcement setting performing relatively complex duties which are non-routine in nature and require exercising independent decision making.
