Job Description

The Job

San Bernardino County is recruiting for Crime Analyst Trainees who learn to conduct research and perform analysis of crime statistics for use in planning law enforcement activities. Duties include collecting, compiling, and analyzing data; preparing reports, records and correspondence summarizing data collected; preparing charts, maps, graphs and other visual presentations; and attending briefings and making oral and written presentations.

Crime Analyst Trainees are eligible for promotion to Crime Analyst upon meeting the minimum requirements and receiving a satisfactory work progress report. Employees must qualify for promotion within 9 months or be terminated.

A current vacancy exists in the Sheriff's Department. The list may also be used to fill positions in the Probation department, as needed.

C ONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

1) Promotion: Crime Analyst Trainees serve under training conditions and must qualify for promotion to Crime Analyst I ($66,456 - $91,332 annually) within 9 months or be terminated.

2) Background: Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.

3) Availability: This department is a "24/7" operation. Applicants must be available for all shifts, including mandatory overtime ; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination. The incumbents will be required to work rotating, night, weekend, day, on-call, and graveyard shifts, as well as holidays and weekends.
4) Travel: Travel throughout the county is required; employees may be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.

Minimum Requirements

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT AND ONE OF THE EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION OPTIONS:

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Six (6) months full-time paid work experience within a law enforcement, public safety, or criminal justice agency.
-AND-
REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION (Must meet one of the following options): Option 1:
Certificate from of an accredited program of study in Crime and Intelligence Analysis.
Option 2:
Associates or bachelor’s degree in Crime and Intelligence Analysis.
Internship exception:
Applications will be accepted from candidates who have completed all required coursework for the certificate or degree, but have not yet received it pending completion of internship.
Education Substitution:
Nine (9) months of full-time equivalent work experience in which the primary duty was performing crime or intelligence analysis AND possession of a bachelor's degree in crime and intelligence analysis, criminal justice, geographic information sciences, public administration, behavioral science, statistics, research methodology, or a closely related field may substitute for Option 1 and 2 above. Coursework accreditation:
All qualifying coursework, certificates or degrees used to qualify or as a substitutionmust be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Desired Qualifications

Possession of a Bachelor's degree from a recognized college with major coursework in Criminal Justice, Behavioral Science or Public Administration is highly desirable.
